So have a series 2 td5. Been driving fine. Suddenly decides its going to chuck out all its coolant and black smoke out the exhaust. Car turns over but won't fire up after replacing water etc. Any suggestions, it's on the side of the road as we speak? Thanks in advance.
 
Black exhaust smoke means the engine is burning too much fuel????

Coolant! Possible leak somewhere?

As it's a TD5 there won't be a quick answer to this.
so get it towed home then wait for daylight before having a good look around and getting back on here.

TD5 chucking water out can be a sign that the head has possibly moved due to the plastic dowels LR conveniently thought to be a good idea.
Usually a little advance warning though, coolant loss, etc.
Assume the garage will need to take the head off at least.

I bought a new engine, well 2nd hand from a company in Derby and when it was delivered and the guy left its found to have a big hole in the sump and a sump full of gravel! I've contacted them and they've promised the world but not delivered a thing! Happy to take my money but now won't even answer my calls or messages! I really thought going to a company was my safest option! Now I'm back to square 1 and don't now know if this engine is a runner or not! Is it worth continuing and trying? I can't afford another. Thanks in advance.

Depends on whether you want to pursue the other company or not.
If not, you at least have two engines to play with. If the head and turbo off the second engine are OK than you could swap them both over, but when you take the head off the first engine make sure you get to the bottom of what caused the water leakage. It could be an overheat followed by gasket failure.
In which case, make sure the deck of the old block is flat and there is no damage to the pistons/cylinders.
Then remove the head on the new engine, check it out thoroughly to ensure it really is viable, then fit it to the old block with new gaskets. If you need help with checking the head out, come back on here!
The plastic dowels aren't meant to hold it in place, they are there just to make sure that the gasket and block goes back on square, it is the bolts that hold it all in place.

It was the turbo that went in the old engine as the engine ran on for a while at 6000 rpm. Took the rest of the engine out. Had a mechanic look at the turbo I've bought and been told it's a good one with no play but my concern is the gravel in the sump, has the engine been run with it in? At the moment I just want to drive up there and have it out with the guy but I doubt it will get me anywhere!

How gravel got into the sump is a mystery. Had it originally been off AN engine, not necessarily yours, kicking around on a piece of ground somewhere, and some complete dick fitted it to another engine that needed a "new" one, without cleaning it out and ensuring it was fit for purpose?
Is it actually gravel and not bits of broken off metal parts?
Again, removing it and examining minutely the bottom end of the engine ought to tell you a bit about this. At the end of the day, the oil pick up should have at least a coarse mesh filter to keep the bigger bits of cr@p out of the rest of the engine, you would be unlucky if the big ends hit any of the bits, but depending on how fine and tough they are it could have done harm.
BUT you are only interested in the top end of the engine, so concentrate on that.
Take pictures of it as you take/took it off, and take the sump with you if you are going to have it out with the guy. I suppose it is faintly possible that the bloke bought the engine in like it. But to be more sure of getting your money back it would be simpler to give him the whole engine back and demand a refund.
Only you can decide and what is provable is always the issue.
Not fun and the best of luck with it all.
 
If there was a hole in the sump and gravel I should think the engine was probably running when this damage occured meaning the oil escaped while the engine was running. The head and turbo may be good but the bottom end probably not. How much did you pay for the replacement engine? Buying secondhand engines is a lottery these days as more and more East Europeans are getting into the vehicle salvage business.

Could be as simple as some idiot running the vehicle into a rock in the ground which burst the sump and it then carried on and scraped gravel into itself.
How bad the engine is will depend on how fast the driver realised what was going on and turned the engine off!
And it looks to me like you have simply bought it from the scrapyard it got eventually taken to.
 
Thanks all for your comments, we will try and contact the company but as yet all his promises have come to nothing. It is a registered company as we have checked it out, though he clearly has no morals tbh. He assures us the engine was running and no hole was in the sump until after removing from donor car. We will see where we go. Thanks again.

Just a further question, used my old engine as a donor and she now runs but has a misfire. Is the original ECU not recognising the new injectors, if so can solenoids from originals be changed to the new injectors please? We've terraced the harness, seals and everything else, this has turned into a nightmare job! Really feel like naming and shaming the company, they are now ignoring all messages and everything!

And it looks to me like you have simply bought it from the scrapyard it got eventually taken to.
could just be damage from when the engine was taken out ? maybe dropped and then dragged along ground picking up gravel ?

I think when I changed mine I was told that it will run okay without changing the codes to try, will just not be 100% but should not misfire
