well brilliant start in the weekend.
Dropped yesterday the children at school and on the way back my LR TD5 was just running fine and just died. The yellow engine management light came on. Got it fired up again after a while and the same thing happened a few hundred yards down the lane again. Same thing a few more times (got me a couple of miles) and then nothing anymore. Engine seems to start after glowing but cuts out immeadeatly. AA man came scecked fuel , all OK. Checked diagnostic no obvious fault. Checked for water or oil on the ECU, all dry. He run out of clues and towed me to the next garage.

Anyone a clue out there or had the same trouble ?
 
No clue as to why this has happened, or what causes it, but if it's any consulation, my 300TDI has done a simular thing 3, maybe 4 times now over the past two years. it will just cut out, die completly for no reason. Every single time its under different circumstances. Sometimes under load, sometimes idle. Sometimes when its wet, sometimes dry. :confused:

When it does, I find the only way to get it started again is to get out, lock it up, (so the immobuliser sets), have a fag, then it will start again no problem.

Two different sparky mechanics, (both very good), have taken a look and cant find anything wrong. I dont know if it is an immobuliser fault, but thats what I'm sticking too.
 
hi it could be heater plug relay as the supply for the fuel pump goes through this and some times its only bad contacts or the in tank pump on its way out

it does not seem to be the fuel pump, as the AA man checked it and it run normal.
Also he checked the end of the pipe right behind the engine and he got socked in diesel whilst I tried to start it.

will check filter and immobilizer maybe it helps.

We have been through a stint of poor starting (required lots of cranking ) and then got to the stage of cutting out every mile or so.
Ours turned out to be the injector copper washers and o rings letting by.

Check your oil level and see if it is raised, ours was slightly and you could even get a whiff of diesel in it.
Our pump had also been quite noisy but is now silent and the D is running better than ever.

Just a thought to check out as apparently it is quite common, the local LR dealer had sold 121 sets of the washers this year alone!
 
I had on yr 2000 TD5 a complete engine failure as you describe in 2004 preceded by stuttering etc. Turned out to be chafed wires going round corner of battery box and earthing one of the control sensors. LR not interested in H&S hazard of car engine cutting out without warning in fast lane of motorway. I was!!
