This is my first thread so will say hi first. i hope i can get some help or advice here as im really stuck, i have a 97 dse, a few months ago i parked up, came out 10 mins later and it wouldnt start just kept turning over, left for about half hour and then was fine, it happened again a few weeks later but i noticed that the glow plug light did not come on and it flashed up abs fault slow 35mph max, half hour later the glow plug light lit up and was fine for another month, now the same problem has occured but its been nearly two weeks now and nothing, no glow plug light and just flashes on dash abs fault slow 35mph max and fires but wont start, i have had someone plug in a launch and snap on diagnostics but it will only read gearbox and not engine, any help much appreciated, thanks in advance

as far as i know glow plugs are only a few months old, would the plugs not working correctly make the pre heat light not come on? where is the abs sensor? thanks

Battery or terminals to it. Mine did this when It had an air leak and I was cranking it nearly flat. put the battery on charge overnight. it may help your cause.

anyone have any other ideas? what would stop pre heat light from coming on? anyone know of any mobile people with a range rover experts in the heathrow area? thanks

Its happened again, car fired up after messing about for some time i lent on fuse box under bonnet which was still loose and it arced out on an earth underneath and suddenly came alive, has been fine ever since till a week ago and now back to same faults, i tried the arcing thing, not a good thing to do i know, but nothing at all again, no glow plug light, abs warning, eas warning and slow 35 mph max, any ideas? thanks, also i noticed when working fine when ignition first turns you hear something like a loud relay click when glow plug light came on but not got that now either, aso pulled connectors off of abs pump to test for power going to it and nothing there which i imagine it should have

which ones do i need to get to? i have just been told it had a gearbox fitted just before i got it, would there maybe a loose earth that was taken off in that area? gets dark by time im home from work so hard to see where earths are, if you could recommend which ones and where they are would be a great help thanks

have a look at the back of your fuse box it might be a dry joint that needs a bit of solder on it .the arcing out may have been something that happened as well as making the bad connection work.
good luck

have tried another fuse box as thought it was problem but still same thanks for reply, can someone point out where earths are i need to clean please

Sounds like problem lies with your fuse box. People must think I have shares in them as I keep recommending it as a fix but it did cure my starting on my DT which was similar to yours ie cranking over but not firing. I did get the glow plug light coming on though so its slightly differant. Mine wasn't getting power to engine ecu relay or fuel pump relay and I could see that the board had been getting hot beneath the relay. You acn use a simple 12v tester to check if the relay is getting power.
There is also an earth connection to body beneath the box worth checking as well for a good earth there.

stick a jump lead on erth to engine.
as this model got the elc fule stop on the inj/pump like the later auto disco?

Could the becm cause my problems? as previously mentioned when the fuse box arced out on the 3 nuts under fuse box i have just read that these go to the becm so could it have kicked that into life somehow before? now if tried to arc out it doesnt fix problem so could it have been on way out and now i have killed it off? also the fusebox smells of burning but been told that most of them do, disconnected all plugs from under fusebox and is the same as if they are still connected so im thinking its either fuse box ( which was previously changed although for another second hand unit and made no difference) or the becm, any help much appreciated, thanks for all help so far

Fuse boxes are a known failure item and cause all sorts of problems. A secondhand one may also be duff. Any form of arcing to earth is likely to cause damage. ECU's are sensitive beasts.

Thanks, does anyone know of a good place to get a fuse box from? dont want to pay land rover prices if i can help it
