Right I have just had my 2004 landmark discovery td5 remapped by a reputable company mentioned on this forum quite a few times. I currently have a 3 inch stainless full exhaust system fitted with no cat. I was told today that the 3 inch bore of the pipe is too large and could end blowing my turbo.
Can this be true as the exhaust system is also from a reputable company mentioned on this forum.
Or is this just a bit a bit of professional marketing from the remap company as they also sell exhausts.
Any help would be gratefully received here as I have spent a fortune now and I am scared here that I have done something that will cost a fortune to put right
Please help!!!!!!!!
 
Did they give any reason for why your exhaust would blow your turbo other than it's 3" diameter, because i can't see any reason why it would.

If the remap company is saying the exhaust system is too open and not giving any back pressure to the turbo, then they really should know better. Not wanting to name any names but there is a company out there who had the market all their own way for years but now have lots of competitors and are not handling the change very well.

The company doing the remap should be taking into account all the elements of the vehicle 'as it is' when constructing the remap, not just saying give me your dosh, by the way your exhaust system stinks!!!


Also on TD5 the engine manage system monitors the operation of the turbo by measuring the incoming charge pressure in the inlet manifold. If you go into an 'overboost' position - which is what the company is hinting at, the control system tones down turbo action.

In summary, unless you plan to thrash your TD5 Disco to within an inch of it's life, you'll be fine. Make sure it gets good quality fully synthetic 5w-30 oil and regular changes.

So long as your turbo has a good supply of clean oil (frequent oil & filter changes) and clean air (frequent filter changes), there shouldn`t be too much to worry about.
 
You can run a turbo with a short piece of tube for am exhaust, in fact that is where it is happiest.

NA cars are all about manifold harmonics to get the best flow and scavenge, but a turbo messes all that up so it is simply all about getting rid of that exhaust ASAP, where a 3" will be ideal.

A tuned td5 will perform better with a 3" than a standard exhaust regards top end and WOT power (you may loose a little low end response when under boost threshold, but your remap should help that anyway)

Cheers for that info, you've all put my mind at rest there I never thrash the engine this is more for power to pull away with when towing our caravan and from the first tow home it has definitely been worth the money to remap.

Something about an over run? But the impression I got was I would be better with a 2.5" from them .........
