Hi all ;)

My 2.5 dse p38 is driving me mad. While ticking over it keeps cutting out this has steadily got worse over time from only doing it occasionly and running lovely the rest of the time to now cutting out when driving to the point of having to drive an automatic with both feet to stop it cutting out when slowing down. i have had the fuel pump changed a new filter housing put in and put on diagnostic test with no luck.
Any ideas would be greatly appriciated as i love my car but hate driving it like this.
look forward to your replies

Thanks Lynne

I have just joined as a member and noted the cutting out problem you were having. I am experiencing exactly the same problems. What did you do to rectify the matter
Thanks
Phil

Hi Lynne.
How low in neutral can you hold the revs with yout foot before it try's to cut out, i.e can you make it tick over at it's proper rpm?

Cheers, Nick.

Hi Nick
It,s mysel;f who has the problem with engine cutting out. I replied to lynne to try to find out if she had sorted the issue out. The problem has got progresively worse over the last 2 weeks. It originally started with the tick over dropping to 250 rpm and almost stalling to a few days later stalling on a a few occasions to now it,s a question of braking with the left foot as whilst holding the revs at 1500. As soon as you take your foot off the gas the engine immediately stalls. I have taken it to a local 4x4 dealer and exh time he,s put it on the examiner it shows no faults. He has cleaned the air valve ( I think thats what it was ) he mentioned there was some carbon deposits. It drove home like a dream ( 15 miles ) and then later that day was worse than ever and is now difficult to start let alone hold its revs.
Any ideas wouuld be welcome. It,s doin my head in
Cheers Phil

Is it chucking out any smoke, possibly overfuelling. When its in neutral can you hold it at a constant rpm or is it all over the shop. If he cured it for 15 miles it sounds like he found the fault and tempararily sorted it. I'll have a look and see what my bible says.

Cheers Nick.

Hi Phil, there are two types of diesel engines, one more complex than the other, one has egr, one does'nt. What you need to do is try and sort out if its delivery( i dont think so) or control. Does it start ok when its cold or has it all gone out the window now. If you do the glowplugs twice before you start does it try harder to start.

There,s no smoke coming out although it does smell strongly of fuel. ( always has done to be honest). It will hold the revs although your having to rev it until you can eventually hold it at a constant. If you could consult your bible I would be grateful. I've taken the car to the local 4x4 place 3 times in last 10 days and each time hes put it on the diagnostic machine its ticked over OK and not shown any errors ( sods law) so its a bit trial and error.
Thanks a lot

Have you been there when he puts it on the machine? only because it's a little bit odd that it should be okay when he plugs it in and he can fix it for the fifteen miles and is it better when its warm which coincides with getting to the garage? Also does it smell of burnt or unburnt diesel? Where abouts are you in the world?

Cheers, Nick.
