hi i went to look at a 200tdi defender today, the truck was great and everything appeared perfect.... except when i test drove it there was a large clunk when setting off i got underneath and checked this and the front propshaft turned about a quarter of a turn! the ujs were solid so it was from the transfer box and the front axle. is it likely to be a problem with the diff or with cv's? and also is it a big job to fix the transfer box which also had a quite substantial leak out of the front where the drive went to the propshaft? would a new gear box be the best way to fix this ? thanks

could be play in both not surprising on that age of vehicle ,easy fixed whichever ,i would be more concerned with bulkhead, bodywork ,chassis etc,all much harder fixes ,knock a couple of hundred off worth a try

Probably gearbox main shaft wear . If it is bearings in transfer box cheaply and easily cured if you have tools and experience.
