Hi, I appear to have excessive play in the power steering box on my 1989 landy 90. Is this normal (first Landy !) or do I need a new power steering box ? If I strip down the box is it repairable ? My wife wont drive it until I sort it (good reason to just put up with it ! ) Thanks in advance.

How much is excessive?
It's normal to be able move the wheel a few inches before the wheels turn.
You probably couldn't fix it yourself if it's worn, just get a recon pump and then sell them the old one.

where the steering rod goes in to the box you can turn it by hand about 1/4 to 1/2 a turn with no movement to the wheels , normal ?

So you can turn the steering wheel over half a turn? If so, that's not normal and quite dangerous, not something I'd want to do fast journeys in until it's fixed.

no i am turning it from under the bonnet by hand on the steering rod coming down from the steering wheel , the power steering is also very noisy . Will have a play with it tomorrow to see how much play is at the wheel ( it dose'nt feel that bad at the wheel when driving). cheers.

theres a nut with a 6 mm allen screw that can be adjusted to remove play but it must be done when steering is central, as the box gains more free play the further you go from the center either way ,if you adjust free play off center it will over tighten when it goes through the center

Mine is the same. I tried adjusting out the freeplay, but it's no better. All the rest of the steering linkages are good, so I reckon a recon box is on the cards. It's not a horrendous job - Buster did a guide I think. Worth getting one with the drop-arm already fitted, otherwise you'll have to try and get the drop-arm off your old box - a bastard of a job in its own right!

Checked it on Saturday again and found a leak on the power steering res, made temp repair with new jubilee clip and topped up fluid, that's got rid of the noise but obviously not got rid of the play. I would imagine that the when new there would of been no play ? Also went to give it a service and found that the **** that had it before had a leak on the sump plug and decided the best way to deal with it was to cover it in weld ! (still leaking). What the F*** is wrong with people ? Gradually repairing 20 years of bodging !! ( but loving it ).

The sump plug is welded in? Have fun emptying that.

if your gonna adjust you steering box via square headed bolt do it with wheels central and off the floor and leave a little bit of play at steering wheel otherwise it will tighten up on lock and also wont self centre when driving

the sector shaft (big shaft drop arm bolts to) is at its nearest to input shaft when 90 degrees to each other ie when steering is central, either side of this center point the gap between them gets larger ,so you need to adjust when central ,and rock input by hand till free play is removed
