I have just replaced the steering box, the old had a lot of excessive play that I couldn't adjust out.

At the moment, the play is about 1/2" either way. It feels much better on the road, is this normal play for this vehicle?

Have you checked the rest of the steering system..?

When the car is newish, the steering feels positive and responsive but not as "tight" as a rack and pinion system.

Check the joints in the steering shaft.

Thanks. At the end of the day I feel I am being picky. The play prior to replacing was totally excessive and is so much better now.

The intermediate staff is new, together with the front track rod and a recon steering box. I assume the only thing left is the rear track rod. I didn't find any play in there but I will check again and see if the new intermediate shaft has any play.

You only have one track rod. The one in front of the axle is the drag link.
