After my disco using more and more water over the lasts week a decided to change the cylinder head. Everything came apart well but after cleaning the head I noticed a groove/pitting where the sealing ring on the head gasket goes round the bore (see pics).

Does the head need skimmed or will it be ok to put back together?

have it pressure tested and skimmed, some say td5 shouldnt be skimmed but I had one done and its still going strong 5 years on

Thanks for replys.
There was a thread a while back about stripping a head and rebuilding it (with pic) along with replacing exhaust manifold an turbo, does anyone know who posted it?
Where is the best place to get Hylomar 3400 gasket sealant from.

Hi
Did you take any pics of your pistons? The head pics seemed to show a star pattern.

Is the same pattern on your pistons?

Heads dont just start pitting, it could be that your injectors are leaking, causing hot spots, while you have everything apart it may be worth getting them checked.

Diesel Bob just did mine, £95 each for a rebuild.

I got my sealant from Turners, its around £35. Not cheap but not advisable to use cheaper products, 3400 is the correct metal to metal sealant.

Did you separate your cam carrier then?

It might have been me....

It's a pretty long slog of posts starting toward bottom of this page -> http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/bennehboys-d2-adventure-254514-19.html

I ended up doing a full engine rebuild.

I didn't skim the head - probably should have but the heaad had already had a skim so I didn't want to risk it.

Turns out it had a crack in one of the exhaust ports so was bleeding coolant and exhaust gas into the oil.

I fitted an AMC head after that, see here -> http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/bennehboys-d2-adventure-254514-56.html

I did not want to go too close to the tips of the injectors and glow plugs so had not cleaned that area when I took the pic, the pitting is where the head gasket seals round the bore. Pic of pistons attached.

Thanks Bennehboy this is the thread.

Head has been stripped and is in getting pressure tested and if ok will get skimmed.

It does look like your pistons have been getting overheated, unless they are different to 15P pistons, it looks like No1 has started to melt.

Google some pics of TD5 pistons, the spigot in the combustion bowl should be more pointed.

Could be the piston oil injection jets are blocked, but unlikely to affect all 5, it does seem that No1 always goes first.

Does not look like there is any melting going on (better pic). The star shape is just carbon/deposits and would scrape off. Are these deposits a sign of overheating?

I am taking the engine out to change the clutch as needs done and may as well do it when the head is away. I took the radiator off and flushed it out only to find the two small connections on the bottom drivers side when completely blocked, I got the bottom one cleared eventually but the top one will not clear even with the hose attached to it. Is there a way to unblock this?

Yes they look better in those pics!

Mine had the star patterns, and my injectors (after testing) were def found to be leaking. Ive had a good look online for a definative answer to if the star pattern is ok or not, it seems that its an indicator of late/continued burning but some engines are ok with it.

There is a very good guide on line by the makers of the pistons for the TD5, Google: Kolbenschmidt piston damage, you will get their excellent guide book, they also do an 80 page guide on piston rings if your feeling really anoraky!!

Not sure about the rad, one thing I did find when I took my engine out was the external pipe into the oil cooler was blanked off, I think it was the feed for the EGR cooler, mine is a late 15P engine so it should have had the EGR cooler but its never been fitted.

PS Give Diesel Bob a call, cant hurt to get a proper expert opinion! (about your injectors!)

That it, the coolant pipe that comes out of the oil cooler round the back of the engine and in to the top small connector at the bottom of the rad. Is it meant to be blanked off??

Yes it's blanked off on later engines, including some 10p.
