I think I see where the guys are going. The short answer to your original question is, I believe "no" because the advance characteristics of a points dizzy and a leccy one will be different. In fact, the advance curves differ depending on what year the engine was built (I think). Hopefully somebody will correct me if I'm wrong on that.
It sounds like you have a remote ignition amplifier. You should be able to check that: look at Rave or Haynes. If all that checks out and you are getting HT voltage from the coil into the dizzy then you should check the air gap between the reluctor and the pick up in the dizzy. Next, have a very very close look at your rotor arm and make sure it is clean with no track marks or other visible defect. Same goes for inside of the dizzy cap, make sure it is clean, any deposits on the cap pick ups gently clean off with 400 grade wet and dry. Check the centre carbon contact is making proper contact and that the spring is free so it properly contacts the rotor arm. Trust me, if you have put on a Halfords cap and rotor arm or a Britpart special chuck 'em ASAP and get genuine LUCAS - expensive; yes Worth it; definately. The pattern parts work briefly but will cause no end of problems - I have been there.
Hope that will assist.
