Hi guys
need a bit of advise with my pickup.
bought it back in july its a 1999 defender td5
last week i was on the M5 doing about 70mph when all of a sudden there was a little hickup and a loss of power, managed to get past the truck i was overtaking got onto the hard sholder and as i slowed down there was a total loss of power and it cut out when i was costing to a stop.
called the rac they came out, and checked there was diesel at the engine (there is) for some reason he thinks the engine has had it, not sure why he thinks that.
took the rocker cover of and everything seems to be turning as it should be.
so he decided to get us recovered home.
been reading up and one thing that people say to check is the oil getting into the red plug on the ecu under the drivers seat, checked it and there was a bit of oil in there but not a lot.
the car turns over fine no strange sounds just wont fire.
and info you can give me would be great

cheers
Andy

I'd check the crankshaft position sensor. Sometimes the wiring chafes through on top of the bell housing.

can you hear the fuel pump priming when you turn the ignition on?

Is it whining loudly or gurgling?

where is the crank shaft sensor ? front ,back, left or right
fuel pump sounds like it always has primes for a couple of mins then stops

Ihad very similar breakdown with my 02 td5, took it into local independant who replaced injector seals ,
That was in 09 , never had problems since.

Decided to get the RAc out today to plug it into there computer.when the chap turned up we told him what happened and he went straight to the injector plug took it off sprayed electrical cleaner into it pluged it back in and reset the fuel pump to run all the time to get any air out of the system, cranked it over for about 2 mins and then it started to cough and splutter and all of a sudden it went.
so it now runs

phoned up landrover for a price on a new injector loom on the shelf £48

Thanks for all your comments and what to check

cheers
Andy

bit of a update.
changed the injection loom in the rocker cover got it started again left it ticking over and it cut out after 10-15 mins then very hard to restart.
could only get it started by pumping the pedal then leaving it on the floor then it would cought then splutter then start.
it also has a small missfire at about 2k revs
checked the red plug on the ecu and it has no more oil in it.
anything else i can check.

cheers
