Agree completely, a few battle scars are fine on an old Landy. There's a bit of work to do on yours, all I can say is enjoy putting it right but don't bodge anything. Whatever it is that needs attention, do it properly: Overhaul the brakes from front to back so that you can be sure that you have left nothing to be done later. Go over every inch of the chassis with a wire brush and a tapping tool. If you find any rust that need welding, cut the rusty steel away and let-in new steel and weld it all round, no tack-welds. Whatever you do, don't weld new metal over rusty metal, the rust would quickly spread.
Mine isn't that bad at all. The two primary things i need to do is a new water pump and a patch or replace for the fuel tank. I'm thinking just put in a new stainless one. Otherwise it's mostly fine. Not show class, still good condition though.

OPs will take a fair bit though.

landys' aren't really a black hole imho, new chassis might be expensive but once bought will outlast you, most other bits are relatively cheap c.f. other marques.

had a couple of old jags over the years they really were bottomless pits into which piles of cash went.

Leave the dents, for now, you can practise panel beating once you get it on the road. Take time to sort the brakes, replace just about everything unless its really good as all the brake parts are cheap. You must work out whether it is metric or imperial then make sure you order all the correct brake parts to match, you really don't want to mix.

It has a new master cylinder, New wheel cylinders and new shoes all round. Should hopefully just need new pipes and flex hoses if they've not been done. Also had new lights and fuel tank. The chassis has all been welded as has the bulkhead red oxide and painted black it's spotless. The diffs, springs etc have all been painted.as well. It's missing the side sills and front apron..The inner mud shields are off but Present. The wiring needs a lot of sorting as will switches etc.
I really think most of the hard work has been done. I'm going.to go over it bit by bit and see what it needs.

That sounds like a great project, very little to do underneath and all the heavy dirty work done. Theirs a lot to be siad for wiriing up your own Series, you can decide whether to go stadard or up-grade / modernise and you can add a few more fuses, relays and better earths that really help.

Yeah I was going to buy a new loom but there's not much too it so I think I will just fix it bit by bit. I'm thinking of fitting electronic ignition as well for reliability although it starts and runs fine at the moment.

Very nice!

Could you post a pic if the seats? Looks like you might have grey cloth covered defender seats, which is something I'm considering. Ta

Ok once I get it home. It's still down at the farm as I'm snowed in. The track to.my.house is about 3 feet deep. Lol

I’d get the mud shields fitted ASAP otherwise the road crud gets right up high on the bulkhead. If they’re not fitted are the holes in the footwells bolted?

The floor plates are needing all the bolts fitted. The whole front end is a bit loose as well. The hardtop isn't bolted on properly. I'm going to slowly work my way through everything and bolt it.all together properly. The hard top need a new deal as well. I need to paint the floor as well and underseal underneath. I wont be using it until all that is done. The first priority is new brake pipes.

Yes, and remember to fit spacers between mud shields and the bulkhead so that water won't sit there and rust the bulkhead. I wish I'd remembered; maybe I'll do it this summer, it's only been 8 years...

I wacked in 2 washers and an extra nut, just to give the best chance of clearing any crud. It's such I obvious trap I'm surprised it wasn't spotted at the factory.

welcome to the club. Owned my S3 late 88 ex mil 2.25 petrol since 1994 and wouldn't want to sell it. yep get odd things wrong but always fixable and many parts are cheaper than anything on a modern vehicle Got mine to a point where its a joy to own Heater is brilliant and with heated front screens it was never frozen this winter. Even featured on BBC EMT dragging an artic up a local hill in Rutland

I've started a mini restoration thread now so you can follow that. I've not came across any surprises apart from the bulkhead at the corners of the vent flaps is rotten. I've got repair panels to weld in there.
