Ok I have or had a 05 Landrover Freelander TDI.
On the weekend I had what I can only descibe as a once in a life time experience.
I was comming down quite a steep hill and the engine started to over run, so I stopped near the bottom of this hill turned the engine off and gave it 5 minutes as I have had quirks with the motor before.

Anyhoo I turnern the engine on and wow what a mistake... it was not in gear (automatic) and it started to rev very highly so I attemted to turn the engine off pull the keys out but to no availthe engine is now screaming with floods of white smoke comming out off the exhaust my duagheter is terrified am I am worried (understatement) so after a couple of minutes and traffic building up I call thefire brigade as I assume the car is about to explode and burst into flame, problem, they cant find where I am (stress level rising) I don't know where I am, country lane with no name....After about a life time (approx 3 minutes on the phone to the fire brigade the engine gives up not with a bang more of a whimper (Phut I sounded like). So fire brigade cancelled, well they would not of found me in time anyway, car has had a dramatic demise in a country lane, fitting I feel for a country vehical. So several hours later I am finally rescued I now have to make the big descison do I spent< god knows how much on a new turbo and head gasket if thats the only damage, I suspect not or just get rid of the beloved Landy..

Well if you had posted in the Freelander section my thoughts are that you have suffered from the not uncommon diesel runaway.

As you have posted in AG I assume this is wind-up or something.....

Is this about your inability to direct emergency services, or the incompetence of those services?
 
JUst want oadd that I think it was a major failure of the tubo, but what do Iknow. The pick up driver sugested that I google disel over run and low and deholdthere is a youtube video of a freelander experincing the sam demise as mine.

The green flag man took two phone calls to find me as did the pick up lorry it transpire that the road does not have a name as it appers to be a road between two roads near a bird sanctory.
 
Afraid it going to need a bit more than a new turbo and HG.

Engine is scrap, even if it ran out of oil to burn before anything major let go there will be considerable damage throughout the engine.

Yep as I thought it either going to cost me load or I get rid of it..My wifes cars so she is going to be really sad to see it go but if its going to cost too much I can't justify it it will be the end of the car...

Is there away to move this thread to the Free lander bit as I seem to upset someone by posting in the wrong place.

Sorry if I my english and grammer is not up to scratch but too much red wine in the system at this time of night

Yes it will almost definitely need a new engine, so you might as well work on that basis. But in the UK you can pick them up dirt cheap, like only a couple of hundred quid, plus another couple of hundred to get it fitted, so for an 05 car its presumably got to be worth doing.
 
Probably worth reminding ourselves again...

When one gets into a diesel runaway condition, only way to stop it is to shut off the air supply. If you have a CO2 fire extinguisher rip off the top of the air cleaner and blast it in there. Otherwise block the inlet with a towel or other garment.

If a manual, put it in top and let the clutch out with other foot firmly on the brake.
 
Depending where abouts you are, there's a few Freelander specialists who could easily rebuild that for you.

How long ago was the turbo replaced? If under warranty, contact the vendor.

I keep a retractable knife in my tool box for this very reason. If the engine races, the elbow boost pipe will get cut. This will stop the engine, before lasting damage is done.
 
I had similar happen to a Ford Sierra diesel some years ago. It would accelerate at incredibly high speed with loads of white smoke.
It only lasted about 20 seconds but each time seemed to be hours.

After a very long investigation and the garage giving up, an old retired mechanic popped in to that garage and my problem was discussed.
He said it was probably a very small break in the head gasket.
It was. Once replaced, it was fine. Never happened again.
 
Thanks for all the replies, still not sure if I should scrap the car or get a quote from a garge to fit a new engine
I guess it is up to the wife as its her car.
 
It's a right bummer what happened but an 05 TD4 should be worth around £2k or more. With a dead engine maybe £400. Get a few quotes and do the maths.
