A good 2.25 diesel can perform ok, but it's finding one. Most series diesels were working vehicles that were, well, worked. I drove a sw b to Anglesey once it had 235/85r16 tyres on and stll wanted to pull more, an overdrive would have worked great on it. I have a Lightweight with a 2.25 petrol in it and it's great for blasting about locally. You could get a Series with a knackered diesel in it and fit a 2.5 n/a from an early 90/110, a bit more power and not as noisy as a tdi.

a 2.5na in an 88 is actually a nice setup - that’s exactly what I did with my 2.5na from my 90
 
I drive a diesel - 3.3L Perkins which I like, but there's no getting away from the coming demonization of diesel. Expect petrols to go up in value well above TD/TDI conversions, I think originality will save the 2.25 NA diesels but wrong engine and diesel could become a problem.. If a cheap 2.25 petrol came my way I'd put it by just in case.

I think I will hold onto the spare one I have in the shed, just in case it becomes valuable .
 
Even though my diesel is in bits again all over the drive I kind of like it.
Let’s face it, we don’t have a series for convenience. They are slow noisy uncomfortable lumps and my diesel just adds to the agricultural feel.
I do like the term modern traffic. It’s much nicer than saying ‘I want to break the speed laws like everyone else’ o_O
 
I prefer driving diesels, but I don't think that it was this is going to be about. I think its going to be where you are allowed to drive without paying a penalty.
They should all be ok for that from an over 40yo perspective, but I imagine they will have to have an original spec engine to qualify... and the debate is over for me as I have found there was a 2.6 in line 6 petrol!

yep, if I find a good one I want and it happens to be diesel it will still be “grab your coat you’ve pulled time” ;) (no diesel pulling harder pun intended)
 
I think another advantage of the diesel is it’ll still run with so many things wrong with it. Apart from a broken timing chain :mad:

having just stripped mine and finding just how bad it was, I can’t believe it was even starting never mind chugging around. :)
 
I'm very aware of the 40 year rule, mine began life as a petrol in 1970 but the diesel fitted probably in the 80s dates from 69 so its "in period".
This caught my attention. We know Powerfull UK as very keen on Land Rovers and selling a lot of aftermarket Land Rover accessories. They have been doing a lot of videos with their new 2020 Defender. So what did they do yesterday?
See below, I think this shows how fast things will move. They clearly have their future in mind, and why not?
