Hi chaps, I'm in the middle of removing the petrol tank in order to

a) renew the fuel pipes front to rear as they are rotten and
b) do some rust prevention treatment on the chassis.

The bloody car has been fighting me all the way due to the towbar bolts snapping and me having to grind them off, every sodding one! Now I've managed to drop the tank down and got all the pipes off it bar one which I think is either a breather pipe or the one from the charcoal cannister thingy. Question is how does it come off??? There's what looks like a green connecter thing near to the filler side which I've tried pulling, pushing and turning, unscrewing but it won't detach. Anyone any ideas???

Hi, if the green part has a ring in the middle around the pipe which goes into it try to push the ring inside with a flat screwdriver or something and while pull the pipe...if no ring push the pipe inside as much as you can then GENTLY try to pull it out...if no ring and the pushing trick doesnt help i have no other ideea
 
I may be entirely wrong, so take this with a grain of salt, but a trick for the type of connector that sierrafery is describing: find a bit of thin plastic tube just a bit larger in diameter than the fuel pipe in your photo there, cut yourself a couple of inches and then cut it open lengthways so it can be slipped over the fuel pipe.

Then with one hand hold the connector and with the other push the sleeve inside the green ring and pull the fuel hose gently out.

I have no idea if this is actually the kind of connector in the photo, but good luck!
 
If what your showing the breather to the charcoal canister, then I wouldn’t bother to trying to part a push-pipe connector after 25 years, assuming it’s is push-fit and the original item, so I would cut the pipe a few inches away and get on with removing the tank.

When the tank is refitted and you wish to keep the breather than join the two pipe ends with a push-fit coupling to suit.
Or isolated the breather, by blanking the tank connector or the pipe end, then unplug and isolate the electrical connection on the canister.
Job done.:)
