Hi all , yet another problem , solenoid gives a loud clunk but nothing else, this also brings on the dash lights / running lights for fan and lights??? Have tried shorting across solenoid , get sparks but nothing else, bump starts and runs fine ,help please !!!

Check engine earth, connections to starter and make sure the starter lead hasn't shorted to chassis - though you'd probably get smoke from solenoid then.

Next up will be taking off and having a good look at the starter, it may just be stuck...

Hi, smoke from solenoid?,yep saw that ,cable from solenoid around the back of engine was smoking on the connection to solenoid if that makes sense! What would that point to??

Could be a short circuit where cable from solenoid to starter has rubbed through and is shorting to the block...or could be a buggered starter. Hopefully its the cable!

means either that connection is loose causing a high resistance and heating up or that cable is grounded out on the bellhousing/bulkhead at back of engine....or your starters shorted out to name a fee :-/

Thanks guys, would that explain the random lights coming on when trying to start? Bumped and had running ,keyed the ignition as if to start and everything cuts out, will be checking cable /starter later

if u turn key and everything cuts out I would suspect something is going straight to ground.

Did find the starter cable welded to the manifold:(, have pulled that away but still cutting out , will be replacing the cable and trying again , will keep you all updated !!

It's the solenoid guys , no clicking at all now after firstly firing up!!!, bridged the solenoid with the trusty screw driver and away she went , so new solenoid and new lead tomorrow , thanks again guys for all the advice:)
