not true 4wd. during normal driving, most of the drive goes to the front wheels. Then when they start to slip, drive is transferred to the rear via the viscous coupling unit. However, this is not switchable, on or off.

But some goes to the back at all times, so permanent 4 wheel drive, but bias to the front on normal roads
 
Are all freelanders permanent 4wd? or are they 2 then switch to 4?

I thought they was single wheel drive.... you know, like them little plastic cars you can buy for your kids to play in..

Thats what it seems like when you take one off road!!
