i think it does open because the sunroof is on the angled part of the roof at the front right? there is what always looks like a big gap to me on a patriot, right below the flat part, people put spots on there.

My Hannibal rack lets me open the sunroof about three inches.
I can go and measure if you want. Guessing, about 4 inches clearance, increasing to front to maybe 6+ above windscreen rail. Pic on my intro might help.
