does anyone have any experience of actual discounts offered by insurers for new drivers that have done the pass plus please?

just trying to determine if it is worth paying for simply from a cost benefit viewpoint once the kids have passed, I realise it may have non financial advantages.

didn't think to do it for my eldest but as he has passed and been driving for nearly a year I think he has gone beyond its usefulness.

cost of doing the pass plus seems to be c£150, so insurance discount would need to be significantly greater depending on how one values ones time.

When I passed my test over 3 years ago I looked at doing this however the total discount was about £80 so wasn't worth it. The price on any Land Rover for new drivers will be eye watering added to tax and the amount of fuel. It's better to get a cheap car with a years life left in it get a years no claims as the discounts are worth more after a year of trouble free motoring. A lot of mainstream insurers wouldn't insure an under 25 year old on a Land Rover and specialists wanted to impose a lot of restrictions. So unfortunately I have 3 land rovers that I can only be a passenger in.
Even with 2 years no claims my cheapest quote was just shy of £800

Depends on how you assess the cost/benefit analysis.

Avoiding an accident altogether, or being involved in a less serious one as a result of better awareness is the main benefit - not just a reduction in insurance policies.

When I was 22 I had to drive a new Sprinter round London for work, and Mercedes Leasing sent all drivers under 25 on a "Drive and Survive" course as part of the lease agreement. Despite the fact I'd already been driving a few years, I found the course useful. Mercedes obviously though it was more cost-effective to give young drivers additional training than unnecessarily repair their own vehicles.

Excess for a single claim is likely to be more than £150 for a young driver.

I agree, but there is nothing in the 6 hour pass plus syllabus I couldn't teach them - in my opinion anyway :D - they wouldn't get a certificate though. So it does become a simple choice of whether the insurance reduction is sufficient when off set against the cost of the course. might also be more worthwhile using the money towards iam or similar.

the drive and survive sounds interesting.

Many years ago When I passed my test, I did pass plus a month or so after.

It cost me around £90, my insurance company then Refunded me £260, YES, they refunded me £260 !

Picked up a few helpful pointers along the way as you do, but all in all Was well worth it for me.

I passed my test back in November 2013. Did my pass plus in the summer of 2015 and while it didn't reduce my insurance (which was £990) at the age of 18, I still learnt a huge amount and it made me a much more confident/safer driver because of it. The course only cost me £75 as the council did a deal where they would pay half.
