When the pump is fitted, and the reservoir full of new fluid, slacken the outlet hose on the box, and kick it over a few times on the starter, or let it run very briefly.
Put a bucket or bowl under the box to catch the fluid. Keep on topping up the reservoir, and repeat until you think it is all new fluid. Then re tighten the union, and turn the steering lock to lock a few times.

Not sure if that is an approved method, but that is what I do.

@Turboman I assume you mean the outlet hose on the power steering box, and also assume when I get to that the lower one will be the outlet fed by gravity ? Apologies for stupid questions but I'm going to give this a go today !

Anyone help please ?

:)

PAS pump all fitted, at the stage of attempting what Turboman suggests so just need to confirm what it is I'm undoing.

Thanks

fill res, run engine keep topped up, then turn lock to lock a few times check res ,

Thanks James - I was talking about draining the system including the steering box so it's clear of any crap in there as well - hence asking about
slacking off the outlet hose on the box itself

you cant very easily ,dont undo a hose, if you want to refresh oil put a thin rubber pipe on the slackened box bleed screw then to a container, run engine and keep toppin up res till fluid runs clean ,you might need to do a few lock to locks

Ok....decided to leave the fluid change.

Have filled reservoir up, lock to lock a couple of times and the power steering is working but it's making an awful noise - like it's straining but the noise like you get if you turned car tyres when stationary on a painted floor ? (if that makes any sense ?)

Yeah keep going lock to lock, it will bleed eventually.

Did you crack the box bleed screw again?

Belt slip can make a squealing sound

Despite the sound is it giving you PAS?

OK, all done @flat

Took a bit longer than the fella who did it on the link I used (@gstuart - legend for that !) but I took my time and followed the instructions.

Didn't crack the bleed box screw at all, I filled the reservoir up and turned lock to lock as we did before, maybe 20 times ? When on axle stands no noise but when under load there was but in fairness it has subsided. Have power steering Ed, yep. Feeling quite pleased with myself having done it myself :) but just a bit concerned about the noise.

that’s great and indeed a massive well done mate , , even more satisfying knowing the money you’ve saved in garage fees

happy days :D:D:D:D

Now I've got a pump off I may see about rebuilding it myself, but need to check what's involved first !

That’s not a bad idea, would be good to rebuild as a spare - don’t chuck it out.

So the steering feels ‘normal’ now apart from the noise?

Where is the noise coming from? It may be the belt.

You can always try cracking the bleed nipple on the steering box with the engine running at idle and the wheels straight ahead to get the last of the air out the steering box.

Well done mate, knew you could do it :)

@flat

is this video any good to show the adjustment of the belts plse , thks

That’s a disco 200tdi as opposed to a defender but the principle is the same with regard to the pas pump tensioning stage using a 1/2’ socket - it’s lower down the engine on a defender and I found it easier to use a ratchet handle orientated to I could push down from above - I think I needed an extension on the ratchet though

thks and that’s what i wasn’t sure of , ref how they differed :D
