It the steering isn't leaking, then removing the pipes won't help.
Did you run the engine to purge the system, or turn the steering from side to side before starting the engine? LR specially say to turn the steering from lock to lock with the engine off to purge, which is actually the recommended procedure for all hydraulic steering these days.
The reason being is that many pumps are now of the variable displacement variety, which don't like air in the fluid, as it can cause damage to the variable displacement system inside.
