We recently bought a 2003/2004 TD4 with parking sensors. When we bought the car the sensors worked fine (we tested them before buying the car).

A couple of weeks later they stopped working. They still did the initial beep when the system is activated by going in to reverse but then it was just silence. The light on the switch didn't flash and nothing happened when getting close to objects. This was tested by reversing up to cars and also by putting hands in front of the sensors.

This week the system seems to be doing something else. When going in to reverse the system beeps, the light comes on on the switch and then the system beeps at roughly 1 beep per second as if it detects something when there isn't anything there. The rate of beeping doesn't change if something does appear behind the car and it doesn't stop until the car comes out of reverse or the system is deactivated with the switch. Again, no flashing of light in the switch.

Any idea on what could be wrong with the system?

it could be either dirt in them or they have failed I believe if you put ignition on and in reverse and go and list to each one if they are working if I have this right you will here a ticking .

+1 to this, put a drop of water on each sensor. the one that doesnt tick or click (it is subtle you need to be right next to them) will be the one thats failed
