Have spent some months reading through the various problems on the p38 (this forum) and have become completely paranoid as to the future of my pride and joy. It is for me a bit like reading a family medical book, every ailment / condition that you swat up on you convince yourself you have it :eek:.
I brought mine back in May 2012 V8 petrol with full dealer history and 60,000 miles, and have done nothing but spend hard earned money on the 16 year old car New airsprings all round 2 height sensors, Driveshaft seals, Plenum filter, Auto gearbox filter and fluid and 3000 mile services and other jobs i have forgot about and not told her indoors :D and still a few things to get round to but funnily enough do not mind :confused:.
I have always wanted to own a Range Rover since the 80's and don't know what took so long but got there in the end and can honestly say it is the finest machine i have owned and pray to god nothing major goes wrong (and i'm not religious) :).
So to summarize it's comforting to know that there is a great deal of knowledgable members on here and will not hesitate asking for help if and or when :eek:
 
Just think of it as a hobby you drive, most land rover products require a deal of patience and their own income stream...........
Just think, they are a lot less complicated than the newer models, I love mine ( today! )

Stick with LZ and you can't go to far wrong.....

If you want to know how much 'Love', help and encouragement there is on this forum....I urge you to seek out a post by Neo2 - it was an epic thread....one of the most replied too and viewed threads on the entire forum (bar the odd ones in anything goes)....

In the mean time, put your feet up and relax - start to enjoy your Range Rover, you have worked hard for it so enjoy it....when the dreaded boing happens deal with it then (aside from the usual preventative maintenance of course)....

Yes enjoy it,we all got to go some time don't mope about get out And have fun , seems like your looking after it rather than most that just wait for it to go wrong !
 
As said enjoy it buy a few bits and store them I have spare just about everything and the old girl gets a hard time then bits fail replace them and off we go again great fun
 
I would advise to have a separate RR fund and keep topping it up every month. Keep on top of all maintenence work they need 110% looking after. Maybe even keep a small 'to do list' and chip away as the funds keep up.

As others have said enjoy. They are crap and great at the same time. Shame they were not built better. But the spares are very cheap. Always go for quality OEM spares and not the cheap stuff.

You are lucky to get one with such a low mileage.
Maintenance is everything + make sure it does not overheat.
 
I've had mine for about 10 months now, and short of the RF receiver (check that out.. seriously...) I've had no expensive problems or difficult. So long as you care for the car it will be happy (although you do get the occasional one which just loses it :p )
P38 problems, so long as diagnosed and treated early, are usually quickly resolved.
Respect it and it will reward you :)
 
I can relate, I am also becoming paranoid since I bought my P38 1 year and half ago... Granted I was already slightly Paranoid before but the P38 did not help. I also spent a lot of money as well on it and will spend more this month too (Rebuild GearBox, Brake Caliper Overall, New Brake Pad, front Diff Seal, Camshaft Seal, Brake line...). But each time I drive the car I am happy with it and there is no secrets new or old a car need care.
 
looks like youve got off lightly. being 16 years old make sure your brake lines are ok from front to back and accross the dreaded rear axle. Mines a 2000 one and just replaced all the brake lines and flexy to the calipers, all corroded like hell. Brakes on these cars can be dreadful and dangerous. Discs and pads are cheap so no excuse on poor braking. A new set of discs and performance pads transform the braking
When the winter is over replace all the coolant pipes around the engine if not been replaced and keep an eye on your water pump. If it overheats you end up replacing the lot anyway. a good flush of the rad as well, plus a good quality coolant . This ppm (planned prevent maintenance) should keep your monster on the road.
The cars got 2 of everthing (gearbox, engine banks, axles, etc) so expect twice as much + on time spent on it. Dont ignore any faults as it gets worse plus can cost more in the long run.
great car enjoy it and have faith in it. You look after it , it will return the favour. Dont take a garages word for problems that arise. If any problems come to light come here first for advise it free and nearly always spot on.

Thanks for all the words of wisdom everyone, very much appreciated and have taken on board all the suggestions put forward. Hope in the future i may be in a position to return advice that i will have gained putting things right on my old lady (the car i mean) er indoors was trained long ago :D
