As the warmer months are approaching i'm starting to think about painting the inside of the rear floor, wheel arches and maybe the hard top side & roof. Just want to make the rear a nicer place to be for the wife (kids sit in the front! lol). Bench seats will cover much of the arches
I'm looking for some advice on prep, priming & painting. I plan to use a small foam roller for these inside areas. I have a random orbital sander / polisher which I assume will be useful for sanding down existing paint and polishing marks / orange peel from finished painted surface. The rear floor and seat box sides are painted black at the moment and I want to change these to bronze green. I plan to use synthetic enamel paint.

A few questions for starters...

What type / colour primer should I use (there may be bare metal in parts where I have to rub right back).

Can I roller the primer?

Do I need to sand between priming and top green coat?

What is the best way to paint the inside of the limestone cream hard top?
Does rollering and brush look naff on this area?

I'm not sure if it's some kind of corrosion but parts of the inside of the hard top are quite rough and almost like fine mortar in texture, although still cream in colour. Maybe old glue?

Sorry for so many q's in one post but happy for any suggestions / best practice / experience :)

I too am about to tackle the inside back! Tho I am going in a different direction.

Roof will have 2mm foam, then auto carpet.
Sides will have 2mm foam, 4mm ply then auto carpet.
Floor will have black industrial lino, as will arches.

Hopefully this will make it much quieter and warmer!

When you paint, if you get back to bare alloy, you should really use an etching primer.
Roller will be ok, and do sand between coats.
Remove old glue with spirits or thinners if its really hard, tho thinners might melt existing paint.

Thanks Jamesbil

Does is matter what colour the primer / etch primer is? Will is have an effect on the shade of the top enamel coat?

I'm painting my current project arm Matt green. Also need Matt red. Still looking for the latter. Suggestions?

Ye should always use etch primer on bare allumimium otherwise yer paint will peel off!
Just give it a couple of light coats, then if ye wish, some normal primer over the top to keep the panel even;)

My roof is worn down to bare aluminium on the top. I assume an etching primer is needed for bare metal though?

Yes. It's advisable. Etching primer contains a phosphoric or sulphuric based acid and zinc, the acid forces the zinc/primer to bond with the bare metal forming a film which stops the metal oxidising. Typically the colour is light grey but you can also get a yellow/orange etching primer. Once you have this solid/bonded base coat the top coat will stick a lot better...

watching with ernest. is this bronze green? have rubbed several patches back inside and out, ready to prime.
