Hi All

Just writing this out of frustration... my friendly mechanic fitted an overhauled steering box to my defender TD5, supplied by Paddocks...
After only 50 miles, the input shaft seal started leaking.... took box off, to return unit... with thhe box off, i decided may be a quick fix, so removed the circlip retaining the seal, then lifted metal dust seal, only to find, a yellow plastic washer cut from a margerine tub lid underneath it!!!!... quailty!

anyway.... put back together and it was sent back to paddocks.... the response was as it had been tampered with, then warranty is void.... which is my own fault... but it does go to show what total sh!t quality some of these overhaul companies provide.... the splines were not in the best condition either.... ad it wass supplied with a shagged drop arm ball joint, which i replaced..... should have overhauled my old steering box myself... certainly won't buy from Paddocks again... total carp!.... supplying poor quailty!..

Not very good, just a little question, if you saw the splines and the ball joint were not in good condition on arrival, why did you accept it, as this for me would be a warning sign that the rest of the overhaul could be questionable.

Cheers

Hi...

my mechanic fitted the box... it was when i was inspecting the steering and suspension after collecting it, that i noticed ball joint condtion, and i noticed splines when i removed the box myself... ****ed off that my friendly mechanic didnt question the quailty!!.. you live and learn!

I would be tempted to not only change my parts supplier, but my garage too.
If you could see the external deficiencies just by looking, what was your mechanic looking at, the girlie calendar on the workshop wall?

This is why I go on so much about the trust between the vehicle owner and the garage. I trust my garage to do the jobs I ask them to and to do it to the proper standards. I also trust them to charge me fairly for their work.
They trust me to know what I'm talking about and if I supply the parts, they are of the right quality and fit. They also trust me to pay up in a timely fashion. That trust even goes as far as letting me use some of their workshop facilities occasionally, knowing that I will respect not only the equipment and use it properly but the H&S rules which might apply.
This sort of trust doesn't come about overnight and it's nothing to do with just being friendly, it can take quite a while and quite a few jobs done properly.

I trust you took no notice of the 'tampering' refusal - you have every right to investigate the cause, and then claim your statutory rights. Their warranty terms cannot take away from that - I'd mention the alternative is Trading Standards and or VSA..... A

Can't understand why anyone would buy a re con steering box from suppliers like paddocks, there are steering re con companies selling through eBay, for half the price of the paddocks box, (£130)
I've personally bought 2 boxes from eBay supplier for disco 2 and defender and both were perfectly operational and delivered next day for free

On the same note I had a recon 'box (not from Paddocks) fitted by my indie. a few years ago that caused a RRC to fail it's MOT due to leaks. When my guy tried to get it replaced the manuf. initially refused on the grounds that the item was over 12 months (actually 13) old. I pointed out that the 'box had done less than 2k miles & as a result I considered it not fit for purpose. After a couple of days a replacement turned up though I had to pay the return postage which was annoying, but I decided to quit while I was ahead.
