Hi all
After a trouble free run on the motorway on Saturday, the Rangie stalled a few times going to work this morning, showing a gearbox fault on the message board. This happened when the car rolled a few feet while in neutral. I checked the auto box level, the ATF was halfway up the dipstick and looks like a build up of pressure pushed the dipstick out. Will need to drain some oil out.
Would an overfilled box cause stalling?
The EGR valve has been blocked off at the pipe.
Water in the diesel / filter?
Thanks
Billy

Depends how you checked oil. Level will always be high with oil hot and engine not running. Should be checked cold, engine running, move through gears a few times then dip. Water air could be a few things hope it's not the quantity servo.

Battery / alternator all good? I don't have an auto but I've heard the gearbox fault is one of the first to crop up with low volts.

Gearbox fault will always come up if you coast with a dead engine.

Wammers, the engine was still warm. Think I'll drain some oil out when cold then top up to the marks again. I don't think that caused the stalling though.
Grrrrr, brand new battery fitted a few weeks ago.

It's not about the engine it's about temperature of gearbox oil. It will always show overfull when hot. Must be checked with engine running moved through gears to distribute it and box oil cold.
Just to reiterate it is highly unlikely to be the gearbox causing the stall. You will ALWAYS get a gearbox fault if the engine stalls and you coast to an halt.

Just out of interest, did it stall while slowing down to a junction? If so, check lift pump and timing modulation.

Yes Grrrrr, it stalled while slowing down to a junction and traffic lights.
Update: Checked the oil earlier this evening, level OK. Ran the engine until it reached normal temp, ran perfectly with no signs of stalling. Gave it an Italian tune up & down the by-pass, still ran perfectly never missed a beat. Don't know what happened, sticky EGR valve or just an attention seeking P38 :D Probably not related, I noticed that the fuel gauge has risen to where it was before the stalling happened and now drivers side door mirror is warm when switched off

Gearbox fault is a dead herring.

What caused the stall? Guess wait and see when it does it again. Lift-pump quick to check (see technical section). Do it warm once the fuel temp is up after a good run. Modulation easy if you have a Nanocom.
