Hi there please help I have a s reg p38 and driving home tonight after picking up a alternator for the Rangerover , I had lack of power and the speedo stopped working the temp gauge went up to light on and put foot hard down but lack of power , traction failure and abs airbag lights on when start up but go out after a few mins , but headlight wipers and washers stopped working ,
Could it be alternator be at fault as drives ok normally the temp went up sit in traffic and lack of power, but looked under bonnet and she is not boiling up at all,
Hopefully somebody as an idea
Thanks guys

Alternator fecked no doubt.

Check voltage at battery with engine running should be around 14.1-2 at idle rising to around 14.6-8v at 2000rpm.

Symptomns do sound like electrical failure...Rangies hate weak electrical supplies!!

If Alternator checks out, next stop would be checking the under bonnet fusebox for signs or smells of burning, they are a notorious weak point.

(Also it helps to know which variant you have :D)

14.2 volts or more at 2K rpm, 13.8/9 at idle.
Opps - My bad

Will remember for next time, in my defence it was late, and there had been many discussions on the voltage output and I got decimal point figures in the wrong order...

14.2 max for all P38s other than the later 4.6 engine with the 150 amp unit and 14.5 volt regulator.

Fitted alternater today but traction failure still showing but battery showing 13.7 volts when idling so new batt tomorrow
Any more ideas please ,
So it's traction failure , airbAg and abs showing also sometimes alternater fault?

Try measure the voltage on alternator, if great difference from battery, new cables recommended or as i did double up.
When buying battery, get the biggest one there will fit.

You need diagnostic to clear some faults, they hate low voltage and abs deffo needs reset, some faults reset them self after a wee while.

If it's still showing alternaltor fault, either the replacement alternator is duff or you have a wiring/earthing fault.
Those faults are typical of a low voltage problem, the TC/ABS may clear when you sort the alternator fault, SRS most probably will need clearing with diagnostics.
Check the under bonnet fusebox for signs or smells of burning.

As has been said I had to eventually replace all the battery cabling as it was corroded internally started by doubling up then just replaced the lot and reseated all earth connections there are a few :D:D
