hi everyone have been browsing the site for the last few weeks since buying what i thought was a dream car off fleabay only to be presented with a complete nightmare, i have managed to sort some of the problems out just by reading posts and saved myself some money to boot! however have had to register today to try and get some help in getting my rangie started and then hopefully i can get it down to the mot station to see if the long list of possible problems are real or just a figment of someone elses imagination ( no doubt i will post up with these at a later time if and when i can get the non starting problem diagnosed and fixed)
anyway i will try to describe the problem and hopefully get some help.
brought the car and drove it home next morning had to tow the caravan to a dealers for some work to be done, on the way i had a lot of air escaping from the car and it dropped to the bump stops! not a comfortable ride!!:) i had that diagnosed as airbags so i bit the bullet and replaced the bags only to find out the airsupply pipes were holed  anyway thats done now, so anyway after doing that tried to start the car and i got the enigine disabled press remote message on the dash, tried the remote and it wouldn't do anything (new batts in remote week before) after many unsucessfull attempts then tried the eka code no joy got the rac out again no joy so i had it towed in to a range rover specialist (not going to name them at the moment) who diagnosed the becm wouldnt communicate with the specialist computer, they then told me that the becm was dead and would need to be replaced but before they would do that they would get it up on the ramps and see what else needed doing as they were doing the mot as well and would see if it would be viable to replace the becm. to cut a long story short they presented me with a list of 101 different problems, which was going to cost £2200 plus vat to put right, ( i have trawled the internet and feel a lot of the things i could confidentally do myself but the thing that is stopping me is this becm problem. I cannot start the car for love nor money can somebody help me to get this sorted, i am not sure what things i need to tell you but if you post a question i will do my best to answer you as best i can!! for now i will tell you it is a 2001 rr vouge 4.6 with an lpg conversion i have removed the keyfob antenna from the rear of the car to prevent spurious signals have left the battery off and tried all the things suggested, tried eka and kicked the wheels numerous times!! hope someone can help

Hi Dave,

I've had the "turning over but not firing" syndrome on my '51 4.0 which was caused by flat battery and cured after re-charging it and using the EKA.

However, my mates '02 4.6 has problems with it not starting but with his, he has to use a Syncmate. It's happened about 3 times now and the Syncmate has more than paid for itself.
His car has what seems to be a tendency to be affected by RF interference, although we have yet to prove it, we believe it's his laptop dongle that is causing the problem.

Hope that helps

Kev

:welcome2: Digitalis1.
Maybe if you were to give an indication of where you are situated there could be a local member you could talk to and may be able to offer help.
Good luck with your problem.

try speaking to bba remanufacturing on 01634687222,they are in rochester kent.they did my becm by post.had another problem 5 months later, returned unit ,they rechecked it all ok foc.

As ENERY said, before you do anything or spend anymore, tell us where you are. There could be a friend round the corner.

Poor old BECM always gets the blame, could just be out of sync, could also be the under bonnet fuse box, check for signs or smells of burning around the relays and fuses. I assume it's a V8?

hi all
wow you guys are so quick to respond what a cool site!:) not sure how i quote people i haven't looking in to that yet but i will!!
the battery is/was fully charged as confirmed by the rac man so i don't think the problem lies there. i will look in to the syncmate in the morning
i live in birmingham west midlands bartley green to be precise, perhaps if there is someone close to me who has syncmate i could come to some arrangement to try this solution before i invest in one!?
hi datatek, im just hoping it is something as simple as you suggest however the landrover specialist had the car linked up to his box of tricks and said he was unable to communicate with the becm, i am a complete novice on this!! i don't think there is any burning smell from the fuse box but i will try to confirm this tommorow after work and yes it's a v8 (sounded really really nice when it was running lol) as i said have tried key code and leaving battery off for 24 hours and forgot to mention tried battery off for 24 hours and key in position 2 but all to no avail!!
i was told by the garage that i needed part number lr0005969 and no other i assume that bba would either have this part in stock or would be able to work some magic with mine? i have looked at becm removal and i don't think this would provide too many problems for me to do if i needed to do this by post!! i don't suppose you know a rough turnaround time for this?
again many thanks for all the input so far
and i will let you all know how things go
regards

Failure to communicate with the BECM could be as simple as corrosion on the OBD connector, sometime the wires at the back of the connector corrode off completely, quite a common problem. Stealers like to quote for a BECM as it's nice and expensive and helps their profits.

wow man you reply at the speed of light!!! lol
many thanks for the reply i have not looked at the becm yet or the fuse box but i will do tommorow, i take it that this corrosion will be fairly easy to spot? or is it normally hidden away ( i suppose the answer will be that it varies lol) and by the obd connector you mean the one in the passeger foot well area? if so then i may be able to discount that as i've had the eas faultmate connected through it but hey best not discount it i suppose!! looks like i'll be on my hands and knees tommorow!! at least this time it will not be praying to god to make it work!!!
many thanks for the quick response

the number i gave you was a company i used when my becm went tits up.i assumed that the garage you took your car to had done all the obvious checks, corrosion, bad earth, fuse box etc.the difference was new becm £1200 plus, revirginalising my own unit £350.you carnt use a becm from another vehicle unless you have donor vehicles door lock, steering lock, eak code, vech bar code and a letter from the pope.welcome to our happy band

Are you sure about that tomcat?... cloning a becm from another Range rover can be done as long as the data can be read from the old Becm, so all thats needed is the information and not the hardware like lock sets etc:)

Are you getting any messages on the dashboard display?

It could be the becm is in immobilised mode.
That can prevent the 'box of tricks' from communicating.

If so, it needs the eka putting in before it can communicate,
but if the drivers doorlock microswitch is faulty, this can prevent that from happening.

So, when you try the eka, does the dashboard lamp flash to let you know it has accepted each stage of the input?
If not then the door switch could be faulty (not unknown)
and will need to be repaired or replaced.

I have known some nimble fingered people to have input the eka
by shorting the wires to the microswitch (morse code effect)
to input the eka in this case.

It sounds like the specialist has not been completely forthcoming
with information for you.

You may have caused your BECM to go into "i am being stolen mode" after too many repeated attempts to enter eKA codes, remote transmissions etc.
You will not be able to reset the BECM yourself. It will have to be removed and sent to one of the specialists who can unlock for you.The dealers cannot do this.
If the BECM is in this state ,the RR specialists diagnostic equipment will not be able to communicate with the BECM.If the specialists equipment can communicate with the other ECM,s on the vehicle then it is likely the BECM is in this mode.

dougdotcom,if you could read the becm then why would you need to clone another?im no expert but ive just been through all this sh#t myself.you can find yourself with a chicken or egg situation,i know i did,one problem causing another.best of luck digitalis1,i found prozac works:frusty::frusty::frusty:

The EAS uses different pins on the OBD connector to the BECM so don't discount it. Yes it's the one in the passenger footwell. You would have to remove the connector to check the wiring properly.
The fuse box usually smells of burning if it has a problem plus you will find blueing on the relay contacts from heat.

Did i miss a post out here... the need to clone a readable Becm is because of faults in the power board, faults in the Cpu board that are not possiable to repair due to the lack of spare parts. ie) "symptoms keep comming back after faults have been cleared a few days later after the Becm has been placed under load"

this would be read by Sm035 through connection to the Cpu, as long as the Cpu can be read the data can be saved and re writen to a clone Becm :beer2:

Hi all just a quick update! Had a look at all the things suggested but cannot
See anything that wOuld suggest fuseboard problems or such like cannot smell burning so have extracted the becm from the car and will be sending it off this morning will post later many thanks to everyone for their help thus far will keep you informed
Regards
