Hi all
I'm planning a transfer box change in the up and coming weeks, after months of clunking form a slipping chain.
I have located a reasonable priced transfer box from a breaker.
My question is whilst I have the box out, what else should I look to do? For example seals, gaskets ect.
I have access to ramps for a short period of time so want to have as much to hand as possible before i undergo the task.

Any advice would me much appreciated!
 
I did my transfer case about a year ago. Unfortunately didn't have access to a ramp so had to do it on the floor!

I looked at the transmission rear seal and it looked fine. It would be worth checking the seals on the replacement transfer case before installing it though.

Also a good chance to check the UJ's on the prop shafts - I found that my front ones were a bit worn, I think because of the additional shock from the chain skipping as I'd replaced them a year or so before (but hadn't had time to do the Tcase).

Also worth checking the front output bearing on the transfer case. I have a feeling mine is a bit worn and still causing vibration. I've got a new one to fit to a replacement VCU but just need to get around to pressing it out and putting the new one in.

If you can release the parking brake cable from the parking brake end, rather than the handle, then it makes it a LOT easier on reinstall. took me a lot of faffing about to get the pin to line up properly and hold tension on the cable whilst putting it back together (even with the handbrake released)

I released the four bolts in the handbrake backplate and left the cable attached, just tied it all out of the way.
 
I wondered if there was an easier way.... My mate was undoing all the back end parts whilst I was doing the front prop and transfer case/gearbox bolts as I'd been in before to crack them loose, so didn't get a good look at the parking brake assembly... He just told me to release the cable, so I did!

I'll order UJ's and Seals might aswell whilst it's up there and I'll get some bearing on order.

I have just joined Landyzone and have been struggling to work out what the banging was under acceleration. Hey presto a bit of searching and it sounds like classic transfer box chain slipping.

I have gone for the parts - chain and rebuild kit been ordered, will let yo all know how I get on......

Make sure it isn't your spicer-joints. When they go bang they really cause damage.

What happened there?

Mind you, these days I have to do at least 2 tours round the house before I go out because by the time I get to the front door I cannot remember if I checked the back. I'd get a smaller house but it is already like living in an Amos & Andy sketch.
 
Thanks all, going to start the transfer box removal tomorrow, I have the chain and repair kit. Going to be a challenge I think, I will take pics......

Well spend the day under the rangey.... Following what I have found in the manual and a few posts on the web. Lots of fiddly stuff, and I am trying to do it without removing the exhaust and chassis crossmember and lowering the transmission........ Taking my time. Will find out tomo if I can do it this way or not. Plus there seem to be more bolts than the manual suggests......

Exhaust is dead easy, or mine was so might as well have that out the way. Props come off easily too. Never had just the transfer box off so will be watching your progress with interest.

Transfer box is easy to remove but bloody heavy and and awkward shape to handle. Two pair of hands are a lot better than one with assistance from a bloke called Trolley Jack. If Jack arrives with a transmission cradle so much the better.
 
Yes it is heavy...... I used two trolley jacks and some wood. It is just liftable. so anyway I have it off the car and on the bench... No time for pics or info yet, just to say I did it without removing the chassis member, exhaust or front prop..... And had to invent a few moves along the way.....:)

Chain off, but how do I get the nut undone on the shaft - it freewheels so how do I lock it? The bearing sounds knackered so it has to come off.

And not looking forward to getting it back on. Well I am, but not the process of getting it there...

I did it the easy way...just replaced the entire box. Then realised the motor on the replacement was dead so swapped them over. Job done haha.
 
Hi All,

Sorry for the silence. Ran out of time. Back in Wales with my P38, managed earlier to close up th transfer box. Had found that a bit tricky. Will put it back on over the next few days. Been a bigger job than I thought......
