The connections for 7N are in the right side of the boot behind the trim, 7S are in the left side behind the trim. You must use these connections. No special loom required, make your own, I can supply the connection information if you need it.

I suggest you fit the modern 13 pin connector, they are more reliable, you can get an adaptor for 7 pin for about a fiver. Very useful for connecting a charger without lifting the bonnet, pins 9 & 11.

Just looking at the towbar picture, is the bracket just attached to the chassis or is there another fixing under the bumper somewhere, all the fixings i have seen so far seem to have some other horizontal bar fixed to the bracket
Yes the square Bar is fixed then there is a round bar bolted up behind the bumper between the chassis legs. You may/maynot have that in place, which is why you see them for sale with the round bar. As yours looks like it never had the option fitted then you probably dont have it.
Put you hand up in the middle behind the bumper about midway up and you will feel it if its there you can also see where the bar is bolted to the chassis (once you know what your looking for of course

No, but you do need to use the connectors provided on the P38 for the trailer socket, 7N behind the trim in right side of boot, 7S in the left side. I can give you the colours/functions, I have posted them a few times before but happy to post again.

A note ref my experiences getting a tow-bar fitted to my 1997 4.0SE.
Like yours, mine had no previous fittings.
I got a complete original towbar from a breaker, including the swan neck.
Rusty of course, and it was a tricky job separating the swan neck from the cross tube.
I then had the cross tube bead-blasted and epoxy-coated but did not do the swan neck as the extra thickness would make it difficult to fit.
All fitted in place with stainless bolts.
Some wiring was there already, albeit unhelpfully all the same colour, but for convenience I used it.
I installed a 13-pin plug. The wiring must be right, as the indicator pilot shows correctly when trailer connected.
My spare wheel well has a formed slot for the swan neck, and it is easy to take it out and fit in place when towing.
Although, as I only tow light stuff, I use a Massey-Ferguson top pin and R-clip to hold the swan neck in place, rather than a bolt, much against advice in this forum. A swan neck that is rusted in solid, with an old bolt also rusted in place, is the more usual method.
