I hardly think my posts defensive! Does it really contribute to posts to criticise others like the one you have just posted?
Am I right? No, its an opinion, but some of you appear to consider their P38 as a classic car and its hardly that and some of its components such as a car stereo for example, in my opinion, should be upgraded if and when they go wrong. Roverville as I very kindly offered information on the first page to help the forum user out, costs around £90 or so to fix, something which quite frankly is out of date and no better than a system costing £300 or less today.
If anyone wishes to continue to have a cassette player as their primary source of entertainment, fine....but people have to realise that LR do not make or sell the equipment anymore and therefore at some stage parts and so forth wont be available to fix them in the future.
As for sound quality? The systems in fitted in the P38 were excellent quality. That doesnt make it the be and end all of stereos. Time like everything electronic has been bettered and surpassed each and every year.
If you think the Hardon Kardon system is great, I agree it is. What I disagree with is the fact on how it stands in comparison to the current car stereo market.
People appear to fiercely defend, you included, the above and I have no idea why you and others dont provide people with options but only blinkered view.

hi guys i got a RR 4.6 hse its got the harmon kardon i was thinking of changing my headunit to a all in one motorised tv screen,dvd player,bluetooth, satnav one
i read about the doors have their own amps for the speakers what the best way for me to get the system to sound good with the new system i do also have a alpine top of range dsp so i can set up the eq's my self.

can anyone one here post a pic of the connectors at the back of the radio for the Harmon Kardon system ?
does it just use standard RCA outputs ?
If so i would guess 3 sets (Front/Rear and Sub) ?
Awaiting to collect my Vogue SE and have been wondering if i want to change the headunit or leave it ?

...and most other modern stereos just looks NASTY in a P38.
The Alpine unit you talked about earlier is a HK model and was used in the later (99 onwards) vehicles.
The HK system found in the P38 is, IMO, fantastic, it knocks spots off of most other car stereos.
If these new systems sound just as good as the older HK system then why are you saying people should upgrade?? You say it yourself further up, the new stereos sound equally as good!! You can easily add telephone support to the existing factory setup with a soundlinx cable.
Adam, did your P38 actually have a HK sound system?? Im guessing from the way you speak it didn't, maybe you should go and have a listen to a HK equipped one and see the sound difference, I bet you it will far surpass your current Pioneer setup.

I have been reading many of these forums recently because the LCD screen on my 1996 HSE's radio cassette has given up the ghost.
I have subsequently read lots about swap outs to aftermarket units including all of the potential compromises, pitfalls (ohmage issues) and compatibility, loss of sterring wheel functionality etc and also, looked for original replacements or second ones on ebay but none of these were, as i am sure some of you will agree 'quite right'.
I then thought that i would give Clarion a quick call as the units were made by them. They were very helpful and told me they offer a refurb and full fix for £78.00 plus VAT !!! This has to be cheaper than a new unit with all of the conversion looms and most importantly means i will not losse the functionality at the steering wheel etc.
The most positive thing though was that whilst i had them on the phone i also asked about iPod/MP3 integration to these head units. Mainly whether an inline A/B switcher between the head unit and changer would work ?? We discussed this for a while and whilst possible, if you want to play around with the cabling for hours, they also suggested something else which they had been considering........
They have offered to, when i send my unit to them for repair, rework the headset so that we remove the tape functionality (who uses tape these days anyway) and modify the unit to include a 3.5mm Headphone or 2 x RCA output on the back in order that, upon 'tape' selection, a 3rd party device such as an iPOD could be selected. They have told me that this would be a 'guinea pig' mod but hey, as i said before, who uses tape anyway. The cost to do this as part of the units overhaul is nominal so i will post again and let you know how it works....

You are so right! I am an aging musician from the late 60's. I am very into 'HIFi", as it was once known. I have played professionally and am fortunate to have a good "ear" for music and how it should sound.
The Harmon Kardon system in my 2000 MY Vogue is the best 'in car' system I have ever heard! I have been fortunate in the last 25 years to have supplied a 'top shelf' company vehicle, changed every three years. I have enjoyed the "stereo" systems of those vehicles, but nothing even comes near to the HK system! What a sound! If I want to listen to MP3 music files, I just 'burn' them to a CD and enjoy them on my 6 CD stacker. I do have some old "ireplacable" casette tapes, which I also can play.

Sent mine to Clarion nr. Swindon last Monday, did a full service and fitted new front panel including LCD display-got it back for £72 incl. postage on Wednesday. Fantastic service by the manufacturers. There is a link on Ebay.

I did the same as Irishrover last year plus I had the Ipod lead fitted for an extra twentyfive quid. Can only echo his sentiments for fantastic service. Must be the best company I've dealt with in a long long time.
