Whilst driving my P38 home today there was smoke coming from under the front passenger seat. i was getting spurrious alarms about selecting neutral and transferbox, slow down. When i stopped the computer under the passenger seat was really hot so i managed to unplug it. The info on the box is
ERR5882
Borgwarner automotive
BWA 44-50-000-008A
Serial No ????????????? heat damaged

Any help as to what this box is for, can i still drive it and (i will be sitting down) how much to repair:eek:

thanks

Anthony

it is the transfer box ecu.

I would think you can still drive it if its a manual but auto would cause gearbox faults.

unplug it and see

I think its about £150 to replace but you need to find out what is causing it to burn up, might be the ecu itself but the wiring will need to be checked first in case you blow the new one

Thanks for that. It is a manual and have tried it back and forth on the drive and there are no alarms and it seems ok. Like you say i will have to check the wiring before pluging in a new one. any suggestions where i could get one? it will have to wait two weeks as i am flying to italy tomorrow so there is one bill i know will be waiting for me when i get back:(

you can try a land rover breakers for one, its not unique to the vehicle and doesn't need to be programmed unlike other ecu's, i did have one kicking about but hell knows where it is now, probably got thrown out

Hi I have the same problem smoke coming from under passenger seat. The ECU 5882 searing hot. Vehicle went into low gearing by its self at the same time. Anyone one know what causes this. I gather this part has been upgraded.
