Later this year I'll be looking at getting another Range Rover and although I love Classics my 11yr old son is dead set on me getting another P38! Trouble is I'm well out of touch with these now, the one I had was nearly new (HeVAC still broke though) and now they're getting on a bit so I want to do some swatting. I've not seen much on forums about rust on P38's. Do they rot? If so where?

Not overly unless you buy a complete dog that has been dipped in salt water or lived near the coast.

Wammers you built a plane from a set of drawings?? I used to boast about my little model steam engine.. I won't now. Respect!

Yeah but i have never built a model steam engine. So respect back at you. :);)
Lol you're very kind ;)

So rot on P38's isn't an issue then - excellent!

I'm not scared of the EAS because I know people that have overhauled theirs for reasonable money and you just have to live with Landrover electrics so I guess it must be engine & transmission woes that writes them off then is it?

There are always exceptions but generally they rot very little.

Beat me to it.
Was gona say adge of tailgate , edge of doors
And anywere the paints been damaged/bad repair
and even in those places its not catasrophic rot

Tbh fanatic's post has stopped me in my tracks - the idea of a glitch in an obsolete module rendering one's car into a 2 tonne paperweight at any moment kinda makes me sweat a bit... Plan A was a TDi 110 CSW and the more I reaquaint myself with RR's the more attractive the Def sounds lol. If only Classics didn't rot so badly.. decisions decisions!

You can have your BECM repaired by a guy on here called Rick-The-Pick for about £200 if it does go wrong. I believe it's a fixed price.

As long as you keep the interior dry by looking out for leaks from the heater o-rings and seals then chances are you won't have a problem. In my opinion it's not something I'd be worrying about, BECMs seem quite robust.

BECM is fine, just fix the leaks and run the aircon all the time. As others have said, lower tailgate corrodes, later 2000 on are better, my 2000 is virtually rust free, my 96 is a rusty as feck just about everywhere underneath.
Disel is better the V8.

Ok well that's more reassuring, is it the general damp they don't like or are they in direct line of fire from leaky heaters? And yes it would definitely be a diesel like my last one, people say they're underpowered but mine flew if pushed so not sure what they're on about. I guess the V8 must be uber-quick!

Leaking O rings for the heater, pollen filter housings, aircon drains and sunroof, all easy fixes. Buy one without a sunroof if possible. The BECM gets blamed for a lot of things when often it's the fuse box or a poor battery causing the problems.
I've had my for nearly 5 years now, like all LR products it has never been without some niggle or other but it has never let me down and has averaged 24mpg over that time. Auto is better than manual as it masks the lack of low end torque on the engine.

Well like I said performance was never an issue in my DT auto - I would've put the average mpg a bit higher though but that's another can of worms! Is the sunroof fix the same deal as Disco 2 ones? I've sorted four of those (2 cars) so far so no problem if they're similar.

No idea if it's the same as the Disco, I just don't like sunroof's and with the BECM on the floor under the drivers seat, one mistake leaving it open a little and getting caught in a shower and you are in the ****.

I won't get a choice with the sunroof the car will be chosen on condition age & colour ...might not even get a choice of colour lol
