Hadn't used the rover for a couple of days, took it out last night got to a junction went to pull away and the revs just dropped then picked up again .
Any clues?
It did it a couple of more times then sorted itself out.
I've fitted new plugs and leads but don't know if it was running on gas at the time.
Also a couple of the relays in the engine bay fuse box get really hot I think they are for the fans.
Is that normal?
Cheers

Can it be cleaned easily?
You can have a go at cleaning them - had to replace mine when the same thing happened - and it sorted it. Don't go for a cheapo Chinese made replacement though - you'll be lucky if it lasts 2 months.

Haven't done this fix yet.
But the problem seems to be getting worse. It very nearly cuts out with the alternator light flickering as if it's about to stall when stuck in traffic.
Also when accelerating hard I sometimes get a proper smoke cloud out the back but not always.
Its a 4.6 HSE 1997.
If it's the MAF I will get a new one . Whos best I have had a lot of stuff from Rimmers but is there someone better. I want genuine parts for reliability.
Thanks for any feedback.

For genuine I've used Rimmer Bros and also Dingocroft with no complaints. Woke up staring at the lights and hearing panicked voices standing around my prone body shortly after hearing the price but that was as bad as it got.

If it will accelerate hard it is unlikely to be the MAF sensor. Look at the idle speed control.

Well I've ordered a new MAF for about £100 from Rimmers.
If it smokes a lot how can it be the idle sensor. The exhaust tips look very sooty .

To much fuel at idle not enough air. Over rich at idle will slow engine over lean will make it run faster. Maybe MAF but cleaning idle control would have been a little cheaper to start with.

I think it's Gems .
Do you just clean with brake cleaner?
Is it easy to identify the part?

Gems is near and just under throttle position sensor. Two bolts don't over tighten, make sure it's sealed on reassembly. Take it out and clean it off it maybe sticking extended. Bit of petrol or whatever you have. Thor is behind manifold on two pipes. Thor manifold looks like a bunch of bananas.
