Hi all, this is my first post, so please be gentle!

I have just bought a 2000 4.6 Vogue and absolutely love it - especially the sound system. However...yesterday the rear speakers started with like a white noise hiss and the sub sounded like it was under water. It righted itself after a few minutes but this morning it happened again for 5 minutes before sorting itself out again. It seems everytime I turn it off and it has been stood, it happens.

The front speakers still work fine. Has anyone had experience with this before and if so, did you fix it? I'm thinking loose connection soemwhere, ore maybe because its been hot over last few days?

Any help much appreciated!!

Thanks for the reply. No moisture in the car, but it is very humid.. Did it stop doing it after a while? Its both sides and sub so maybe not an amp problem but a head unit one?
 
Very rarely is it the actual head unit.

The amp can be a pain in the arse, i would check the wiring to the back of the head unit first and check connections etc.. Also see what the previous owner was up too behind there.

Then check the wiring on the amp and changer for connections and corrosion..
 
The main amp is in with the cd changer and sub unit, which is in the l/h side of the boot behind the carpeted panel..

There can also be an amp on each speaker.
 
it wwill only have one amp behind the sub as its a 2000 model. take out the sub and its behind there. its all seperate.
 
Thanks for your reply. Sub is out and have found the amp. Only done a bit of wiggling but still really loud white noise through the rear speakers. Going to pull the head unit tomorrow' and check connections there. If anyone has any other ideas give me a shout!!
 
the amps on the late models are notorious for giving up and cant be repaired, and replacements cost fortunes so fingers crossed it is just bad connections. is it nice and dry back there? I would try insulating it a bit when it goes back together
 
Sounds like dodgy connections and moisture to me aswell. Would it be possible to remove the carpet cover then put in a fan heater to dry it out?
 
I had exactly the same symptoms that you mentioned earlier on in this thread - after a particularly heavy couple of days of rain, the sound from my speakers was like white noise. It lasted for about 3 or 4 days, but then - thankfully - it resolved itself. I'd almost resigned myself to having to go and get myself ANOTHER bloody amp.

I'm sure that it's down to water ingress around the NSR window. When I've got the time, I'll have a look at getting some silicone around the bottom of the window.

I've also been thinking about how I could protect the amp itself. I don't like the idea of covering it, but maybe that IS the answer. I did toy with the idea of fixing a bracket to the side of the subwoofer, to allow me to move the amp in from behind the carpet panel so that at least it would have a little bit more protection. Apart from the obvious issue of having to extend the cable to reach the amp, does anyone see any reason why this wouldn't work?
 
Thanks for the replies!! Had the head unit out and all seems well there. It seems really dry back there, but may get a hair dryer in there to see if I can get it working again! Didn't realise that replacement amps would be £300!! If I take the amp out is it worth trying to open it up?
 
Right, seems like I need to ditch the old system as those Amps are ridiculous!! If I get a new head unit and the adapter cradle, do I still need the amp for the speakers to work? I can get a head unit with a separate sub output but would I then have to rewire all the speakers in or do they run direct from head unit? I can find loads of threads but not that answer my questions!! What is the best thing to do? Thanks, Mat
 
I believe you have to by pass the system and rewire. not 100% sure. somebody on here will know, just make sure it is the amp before you **** about. maybe find sombody local and try their amp?
