Hi
Has an annoying ticking. It's distinct metallic sounding one tick per revolution. When cold it's not there but comes after 2 minutes warm up and then continues. Heard at idle up to approx 2000 rev. (hear it - link to video/sound: P38Tick - YouTube ). Cannot point where noise comes from - but seems most prominent from top and bottom rear of engine.

The following has been made (w/o effect):
* New Cam, lifter, pushrods, rockers and rockershafts
(Old cam were worn down on 2 loges in rear and general sound
picture improved a lot - but tick still remains.)
* All 8 cylinder liners fixed w. screw (as many does)
* Engine flushed and new oil (15w-40 mineral) - no effect
* New exhaust manifold gaskets (cannot see/hear any exhaust slip)
* new timing chain

General:
Fuel economy 17-20 mpg, sounds good (execpt tick),
Oil pressure seems good(oil warning bulb stays off always when running).
Noise remains unchanged when removing ignition for a cylinder at a time (testing)
Cooling temperature normal (no gasbubbles in cooling)

What could it be making this ticking sound ?
What should i try next ? (new oil pump ?, Head gaskets ?, con-bearing, big end bearing ?)

If its not a stuck lifter then sometimes timing chains can slap causing a regular ticking sound. That is if the guide/tensioner is worn. Dunno about on an rv8 but I had this on an old nissan. Worth googling to follow up maybe?

Update:
I took a soundprofile and ran through moviemaker - i could pinpoint the
Ticks - "millisecond distance" were at 300/minute - so half og
Engine rev.
I therefore ran through my pushrods and rockere - hold each
Rocker with a woodpiece - still ticking. But noted that one of
The pusrodtops/rockerbed were squirting oil - pressed a woodpiece
Against the side of pushrod and the tick went away!

Hope someone can elaborate on this

;-)

One of The new (cheap) rockers i put in had the push
Halfsphere 1 mm higher up than standard. Sound
Could not as usual be dampende on the rocker - but
Only on the side of the rod.

So good advice will be - do not thrust new rockers - and
Ticking cannot be always be traced to a rocker by entering
Searchblades or hold hand on rocker (due to oil good pressure
In rocker halfsphere.)

So SOLVED. !!!
I will order adjustable rods now (and a new rocker)

Excuse my typing ;-) iphone and from Denmark

Please can you tell me more about liner slip cure with screws?

I have considered doing this myself as so far my 4.6 is good but as now nitrosed and supercharged prehaps not for long!

So how many bolts per cylinder?
How far up from bottom of liner?
What size bolt?
Did you tap and drill from inside liner using 90 degree drill?
Any pictires??
Any problems????

Thanks
