Hi All,

I have a beautiful P38 4.0 V8 Petrol that just won't start, It has been stood for quite a while, so I've charged the battery, it will turn over but just won't fire, working through the forum, I've tried various suggestions, I've reset the BECM, re-coded the EKA both seem to have worked fine, there are no fault codes on the dashboard, I've checked the fuses and none seem to have blown, I've check for lose wiring - doesn't seem to be any, `taken the fuel cap off to check for a air lock, checked the fuel cut off switch, again seems to be fine, I replaced the spark plugs and the plugs don't been to be sparking

Any ideas on why this would be happening please and how to fix would be gratefully received.

When you say reset the BeCM....how did you achieve this?

No need to recode the EKA as that will not prevent the car starting.....

Can I assume you mean you have re-synced the BeCM to the Engine ECU....?

Hi,

Sorry I'm new to this so learning as I go along, I bought a BeCM sync mate and followed the instructions and it flashed green exactly as it was supposed to, with no error messages on the dashboard to show that the engine had been disabled.

thanks

It could be your engine Ecuador’s needs re syncing with the becm but not sure why u not getting a spark from plugs someone with more knowledge than me will be along to help soon saint v8 has replied so he be back soon and he has great knowledge on these cars

Pete, they say they have bought a syncmate - that will reset the Ecuadors (ECUs) to talk to eachother.

I would be tempted to look at the Crank Sensor - and also get it on some diagnostics to see if there are anyother faults logged.

Thank you, I will have a look at the crank sensor tomorrow, will it be easy to identify if its broken?

I don't have a diagnostic machine, so will need to get someone out

A physical inspection may show if the bracket is broken, the wiring is sound or the connector is broken or corroded.....The only way to test if it is working would be to put it on diagnostics which can read live data and see if the ECU is picking up the pulse.

Thank you Saint, looks like I'm calling the mobile mechanic out, unless I can find some diagnostic software / machine somewhere

These are great cars, but if you are keeping it in the medium to long term, it is best to invest in your own Diagnostic gear.....it will pay for itself over and over again.....

I've had it 10 years now, but I've always had someone helping me with the basics i.e. brakes, but I've never had it refuse to start before other than when the battery has died and needed replacing so this has frustrated me immensely.

Well in my mind - if the ECU's are in sync (as shown on your syncmate) but you are not getting a spark, the ECU doesn't know the engine is turning over - which comes from the Crank Sensor.....Do you have any RPM's showing during cranking (I can't remember if the RPM rises as the engine turns over - mine has its heads off currently and has been nearly 3 months since I last drove it!)

To be honest, I wasn't paying that much attention to the RPM's, I don't thing the dial moved when I was cranking

You'll need confirmation from A N Other on the RPM showing while cranking as I can't recall if it does or not.....but I would be checking the CPS in anycase.

No revs while cranking IIRC.

It's odd they would change a basic parameter like showing the revs. The xjs which is gems 6 definitely shows 200 when the crank sensor works and nothing when it's knackered. To check on mine I'd have to take the fuel pump relay out. I'll do it one day! This is such a common problem on these boards though!
