Strong smell of petrol around the filler cap area after use. Not there if vehicle is not used so can't be a permanent leak. No obvious signs of leaks. Have ordered a new filler cap worth a go for only £7:50 but has anyone else got any ideas. Breather tube ???

By the way to all those who kindly contributed to my leaking oil sump thread I have managed to get a 2nd hand one off fleabay probably easier and certainly safer than me being let loose with welding.

What car is it?

I have the same prob but I can see a weep but not where from!

if the fuel is low it does tend to smell a bit, i notice it as i run on lpg so dont keep much petrol in there.

try filling it up a bit, around 1/4 to 1/2

Mine weeps a tiny bit when brim full but stinks all the time its a 1990 classic, I have had a quick look and there is three pipes coming off the filler, the filler, the vent and a small one going up to the charcoal canister I am told, I only refiited the fist two in the summer but the wernt new ones so I am hoping its just the end of the vent pipe is split with age.

I am going to have a better look on saturday if it doesnt rain

Up near the filler itself there is a thing called a fuel/vapour seperator according to RAVE i wonder if that could be dodgy?

Well I now stink of petrol. after playing with the feker all afternoon.

I had half a tank and although there were some marks on the underseal I still couldnt see where it was coming from.

Went and brimmed it (another £40 to fooker Brown) and its was dripping but I still couldnt see where from exactly. It seems on mine the vent hole is at the top of the filler neck, with the larger vent pipe and the small one to the charcoal canister coming off the same nipple.

Pulled off the bigger one as it looked the wettest and obviously as I had brimmed it I ended up sharing about half a gollon with the drive.

Hose looked good but the clip had seen better days but as usual even though I had stocked up I couldnt find the right one.

Its now sporting the 3 ultra tight cable ties.

I will report back when the fuel has evapourated (about a week lol) and I can tell if it is still leaking or not.

For fooks sake  lol

Decided to book mine in with my local LR expert - small local guy - very good. Could be useful to you Fett we are in Bournemouth and you are s.hants! Will let you know what he finds.

It was my larger vent pipe , cable ties holding and it doesnt smell now!

amazing how it only being slightly loose caused all that stink!

How did yours go guys?
