people could you please help me im stressed!! I have a 98 'r' plate dse 2.5 auto diesel range rover, when towing my caravan when i hit a hill the temperature gauge rises into the red and the engine cuts out into limp mode, but when im driving normally about its fine, there is no fluid loss or gunge in the expansion tank so i dont think its a gasket but im no professional so really cud do with some guidance! Im thinking something electrical because of no loss of fluid, i dont want to go to a garage and they charge me a fortune when its something simple that maybe i cud do myself at home

Probably needs the Rad flushing out as these can block over time or ideally a new rad also check the viscous fan out and make sure the front of the rad's isn't blocked with crap i would get checking before any damage IE warped head occurs

I will check, but I think it says in the handbook that when towing heavy trailers uphill, manual mode should be selected and a lower gear used. I assume this is to reduce slip in the torque converter which then heats up.
 
Its always worth clearing out any crud that will have been collected between the intercooler and radiator. there is a small gap between the two and over the years it fills with general road muck reducing the air flow through the rad - cleaned out a neighbours after similar problems and now no overheat even with a couple of ton on the back.
Simply remove the intercooler and clear the crud with a hose jet or better still a pressure washer.

Re-read the book, the overheat info refers specifically to auto gearbox overheat not engine overheat.
