Hello, can any one please help me!
I have just bought a 2.5dse P reg and we love it,apart from it has over heated on us twice now.About 100 miles between the 2,each time i have had to put about a gallon and a half of water in it.The car came with a lot of reciepts,1 of which was a new cylinder head at 99500 miles. It has now done 110000,Have checked water in oil and seems allright, does not seem to be any leaks.
Has any one got any ideas or can recomend a L&R specialist local.I am in ashford kent UK.
Any advise would be much appreciated.
I have also ordered a Power Digital Box from Rimmer Bros.If any one has any tips.
Many thanks.

poss thermostat sticking or radiator cap faulty.
maybe electric fan not cutting in when required?

Sorry to hear about your problem. I have got a P reg 2.5dse and had exactly the same problem about 2 years ago, she'd done about 110,000 miles then. It actually blew the top out of the rad. Before that happened it kept getting hot and over heating. The cause of my problem was the fans for the air conditioning were not working and in hot weather standing still the heat did not disperse from the heat exchanger quick enough. Also I had a problem with a viscous coupled fan that did not draw air through the radiator, relying only on ram air to cool it.
You need to check that your fans for the heat exchange unit on the air con are working, check your viscous fan is working, a new thermostat is a must if it has been that hot, it is also worth checking that your water pump is working properly - there is a nylon impeller on the inside which can slip on the shaft then it doesn't pump water quick enough around the system to cool it. With that kind of mileage I would consider changing all the rubber hoses i.e. top hose, bottom hose, heater hoses as they have a tendency to go brittle from the inside and split when you least expect it. As we found out while travelling at mach 2 through France in November 05!! Good luck!

thank you for your help.According to my bills i have, it had a new water pump, thermostat, and viscous coupling(£141) ? what ever that is at 99512 miles And all the hoses look like new.I am fairly sure when it over heated the front 2 fans were not working, does any one know why they would not work?
Thanks again

stu

either the fans are buggered, (unlikely as there are 2) or the temp sensor/stat is faulty.
also poss there is no LIVE wire to the unit.

To test the fans - take the front grill off, find the wire that comes out of the fan motor and trace it down to the connector, one on each motor. Disconnect one at a time. Get a length of 2 core wire of approx 1 metre long, put 2 connectors at one end that will just fit inside the plug of the wire going to the motor (do not connect yet). Connect the other 2 ends to the battery. Very very carefully touch the terminals on the plug going to the motor with the other little terminals that you have connected to the other end of the wire. Motor should spin. Do the same to the other fan motor. If either of the motors don't run, that is where your problem lies. Mine did this and when I took the motor apart with a bit of brute force (not supposed to come apart really) the wires had broken off the brushes. This problem does not seem to show up on its self diagnostic system i.e. no picture of a book on the LCD screen by your heater controls.
If the fans run OK, try your single stage switch behind the bumper on the near side. If you look underneath you'll see a canister and some pipework. The single stage switch is the one on the pipework. Disconnect the plug and with the ignition switch turned off get a small paperclip, open it up and carefully push it into the plug on the wire to make contact between the terminals. Now start the car, turn your heater control to "LOW" on the temperature setting. See if the fans are running. If they are, it will be that switch there that is your problem. If they don't run, you have got to start and check the relays and fuses, however, they usually show up on your screen as a fault. Good luck and be careful!
p.s. for some reason if one fan stops, they both stop

There is a fault showing up on the climate control screen.
We have tried the fans by shorting them out and they work.
Found the switch on the cannister shorted that out, started car and selected low and nothing happened.
Checked fuses and relays and all seem ok.I have just won on ebay a workshop manual but it wont be here for a few days.
Does any one know were the sensor is that tells the fans to come on,or do i have to take it somewere who can work the self diagnostic.

thanks stu

There are 2 switches where the cannister is: 1 is actually on top of the cannister that is your two stage switch, the other one is on the pipe at the side of the cannister, that is the one you should be testing. This second one is the one that switches the fans on and off. Pull the plug off it and put a paperclip in the terminals of the plug on the wire, start the car and the fans should come on, if they don't you will have to take it to be plugged in to testbook.
While the car is running you can carefully wriggle the paperclip to make sure it is contacting on the terminals.
This test should work because I did it on mine and ran it around for a few days with the paperclip taped in and it did show a fault on the screen because of that. Yours is actually showing up a fault, so they will be able to find it when they plug it in.

Sounds exactly same problem as me.
I am just back on road after 3 months
Sounds like head gasket i over heated twice also,
then after a bit handbook popped up on air con panel = blown heater matrix.
So I had replace heater matrix before LR would pressure test system.
Took it to a specialist .
Gasket had a small black mark between number 3 cylinder and water jacket.
I was so lucky no damage to head.

Paul

It had a new heater matrix at 103405miles.
Torque converter drive plate at the same time.
cylinder head at 99000
water pump
thermostat
viscous coupling
injector
auto box
And finnaly a new turbo.................................

Surely there is nothing left to replace..................

Sounds to me like someone was trying to fix an overheating problem and never got to the bottom of it.

The tolerance on the head is pretty fine on the 2.5, if the new (recon?) head wasn't spot on, it could still be a head fault.

Matt.

Quick up date.Replaced viscous fan, didnt work.Replaced thermostat, didnt work, checked water pump, seems ok.Replaced radiator yesterday and drove it to work today and it has just over heated on the way home.It goes from middle of the gauge to boil in about 50 yards arfter i have been driving for about 40 minutes or so.
It went to land rover on monday to check the fault on the climate and they were no help what so ever.............Charged me £90.
Can any one tell me were i can go to have the air con looked at to see if it has any thing to do with the over heat please..I am in ashford kent..

thanks

Hi there, sorry to hear you are still battling with the rangie. I've only just read your post. Try one more thing. Change the cap on the header tank. It could be releasing the pressure and causing it to over heat. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

Hi All
I've the same problems as you all have my P38 is fine while driving normal but drive it on the motorway then the temp starts going up
Through suggestions by Mudplugger i found that my electric fans weren't working and followed his instructions and got them working, well only to the fact that i have a paper clip in the connector so i will have to get a switch
could someone tell me how this switch on the side of the cannister comes off does it just unscrew or do i have to do more also are they expensive
i have to go to the main dealers for a expansion tank cap as this might be my problem along with the pipe from the rad to the expansion tank

could someone let me know before i have a trip out the dealers

Many Thanks

Andy

dont know if this means anything or will help but .....

My AC is leaking .... so what u may ask ..... but I didn't know and left it switched on ..... engine overheated on motorway ... had music on so loud I never notice till there was a loud bang, liners slipped .... blah blah, u know he rest ..... anyway, new motor fitted .....

switched ac on by accident, within mins its blowing hot water and steam out of every orrifice .... cooled it off, ac switched off ..... been running sweet as a nut for 50 k thousand miles since .....

Diagnosis ....... for some reason, when the AC is discharged and not working, if you have it switched on it does something ... (I have no idea what) that causes the motor to overheat in mins ..........

Treatment .... make sure ac is switched off everytime you start it up ....

I had head gasket go between 2 cyls and and catch water line so only sympton was losing water but then went pop big time so be careful

Hi
i changed a few things on the car like the rad cap the thermostat and the pipe from the rad to the expansion tank but it still got hot on the motorway untill i read some where that if you bring the car up to temp and then turn it off and feel the rad fins for any cold spots then it could be the rad.
did this and sure enough it had cold spots so got a rad from a supplier £110 new not to bad and just fitted today
took it for a 50mile motorway trip and the gauge stayed in the middle all the time (touch wood hope thats crack it)
only thing that worrys me is that when i got back and felt the bottom hose and bottom of the rad it wasn't all that hot is that normal
