Well this garage marked it as a fail (major defect) exhaust insecure I phoned he says its just a bracket at front, he hoping he can get ramp in next hour or so and if so 5 mins and its fixed he says and an easy not, government website shows fail but says MOT still valid till 23rd November and I'm hoping its ready by 3 because I need to get kids, he says if I take it for half hour it won't worry him but he says police may have issue if caught but it hasn't failed on serious or dangerous and still shows as valid MOT, I don't mind that though yesterday garage never even mentioned hanger

Does not matter when old one runs out it has been tested and failed so is illegal to drive on road. Until it gets a pass.
 
I know but I don't mind I did know the hanger was broken few weeks ago but if I'm honest I forgot about it and if that's all then ....

no idea if thats true, just something I was told!

Mine has passed the last 5 MOT's with no advisories. The guy who does my MOT praises me for obvious maintenance on it. It's what he likes to see
 
I've had advisories on my Jeep for worn pads and discs on 2 month old pads and discs, brake pipes covered in grease like material that they did and I have never been near!
the last 2 MOT's the brakes were checked 2019 with the tapley thing, didn't do the handbrake as the battery went flat! this year didn't even test them as road was dug up and he couldn't get out, just a visual inspection, and I'd spent a couple of hours making sure the handbrake actually worked!
 
Passed MOT today with just advisories that my indicators were not orange enough
Lucky bugre! I 've had cars fail on that and on the red of the brake light not being red enough even though the official number was on the lense!
That tester got sacked eventually!

My Clasic & mot man share the same experience, mind you the car rarely covers more than 2k per annum & I can't claim the credit for servicing.
 
I put car for MOT today and long storey short the tested hasn't a clue on 4X4'S so aborted the test saying he couldn't test handbrake I think he was trying on rollers saying the reading was all over the place and it wasn't wanting to stay on rollers so how is it done, apparently everything else was good and really god emissions
If he couldn't test the car, and it wasn't your fault then you shouldn't have had to pay for the test. The dickhead shouldn't have even taken the test on!
 
As for testing a transmission brake with a Tapley meter, this is perfectly OK and the tester should not do it at a stupid speed, something like 20 mph if i remember correctly, I'll see if I can find the link to the MOT testers' manual.

All my discos get tested with a decelerometer. Never had a fail on them.
 
I'll never never forget the story i heard about a landy that went in for service. Bloke didn't do the handbrake properly, customer picked it up and when the drum got hot enough, rejected itself thru the passenger window
 
Sounds like an idiot. Why would you do that??

Only time I use my handbrake is when parked or stationary or a hill start. I leave in gear when parked aswell.

You cannot do A ‘handbrake’ turn in a vehicle with a transmission brake!
Yes you can, IF, you are on loose/slippery ground, the center diff lock needs to be OFF, and you take care to apply handbrake slowly.
This is a recognised dodge when trialling to get a tighter turn, I can turn my 90 through 180 deg in little more than the length of it. Just need to be gentle with it.

you are correct, i was more referring to the 'handbrake turn' the likes of which youths do in car parks - go fast and just yank it up - thats what i was meaning. Using it in trialling is a more specialist driving technique, from a driver who has a more advanced understanding of the vehicle and driving it in a varierty of situations if you see what i mean?

My tester parks it on the incline at the exit of his garage after the test,if it holds it's passed.I've been using him for years from when I was in the trade so he knows I look after my car.
