I've searched for an answer to this but can't find what I'm after so I'd be real grateful if anyone can advise me what I should be filling the gearbox and transfer boxes with. I recently put Dexron III in both but the handbook says Dexron IId. Is there any difference in performance/viscosity that I should be worried about or can I continue with the Dexron III? Thanks

landrover changed the spec of oil from dexron to a fully synthetic mtf94 for the r380 manual box, makes for a nice smooth change. ive saved you putting on wait by telling you that a,:D.

couldnt coment on that coz ive never driven two identical boxes to destruction running the different oils, i can say it makes the gearbox a lot smoother though which to be fair the 380 needs all the help it can get on that level. obviously landrover saw it helping the box aswel.

they originally had atf dexron 2 as specified oil ,mtf can help with gear change on some boxes but not all ,ive reconditioned nearly a thousand and stripping repairing you get to see what effect different oil has and those on mtf still have the dog teeth wear on baulk rings as those on atf ,not changing oil regulary seems to shorten life more so than other reasons ,you can certainly tell those that have as obviously still broken but otherparts have long life still in them but those run on same oil too long have wear on all parts

theres a lot to be said for regular oil changes, when i owned a p38 i used to change the engine oil and filter every 3k and all the rest of the oils once a year, never had a problem with the old girl. im hoping if i do the same with the td6 it will run as reliable as the 38 was, heres hoping.

Lol!! You're a bit late to stop me getting fat......by a few years. I like the sound of the mtf94 though. Will I stick with the dexron III in the transfer box? I've only had the P38 a year so am still getting to grips with terms and abbreviations, I take it that the r380 is the standard manual gearbox fitted to a late '97 vehicle?

it gets its name from its torque rating 380nm.lt77 got its from 77mm between layshaft and main shaft centers as lt95 ,lt85 ,and series lt76 transfer box lt230 230mm between centers of input and output r380 has same dimension as lt77 ,77mm so needed different designation ,r380 covers a range of boxes fitted to def ,disco,rrc,p38 from 94
