Hello
Can anyone give me a circuit diagram for the low range system? When I press the button neither the light or the message come on so I'm assuming it's an electronic problem and want to get to the bottom of it.
Any suggestions as to what the problem is would also be appreciated.

Land rover workshop manual. Just do a search for rave P38 manual and you should find plenty links for it.
Very valuable for a P38 owner!!!
 
Welcome to the P38! Fantastic car but they can be frustrating. Had mine almost 1 year and it's not been too bad generally. Probably spoken too soon there!
Anyway, this forum is a godsend, yes, you might get ribbed a bit sometimes but the wealth of knowledge is stunning!
Just try to keep the questions sensible and do at least some research and grow a thick skin and you'll have a ball!
You might want to think about getting a nanocom too. They're not cheap but can pull you out of the fertiliser many many times. Worth every penny.

Take the seat out, get the control module number, look for a second hand one with identical number, fit and try if no joy take the motor off gearbox and just do basic test with 12v supply...........it will be electrical, new controller £10 and new motor £40,.......cheap start

Yeah I know what you mean, ive only just turned 16 and it's a big car to use as my first project car. One of the 13 previous owners has messed around with it and not done the best of jobs to it. They've obviously tried to upgrade the car with different things and have left jobs badly done or half done I have been finding this website really useful your right it is very good.

Okay that sounds like a good idea, I think I will take it apart and do some tests to see. Thank you for the help
 
The Transfer Box ECU can burn out if the Transfer Shift Motor gets 'sticky'....

First thing would be to remove the TB ECU (under passanger seat (UK)) and smell it!!

If it is smelling burnt, next test the shift motor as above for free movement.

If the TB Motor is stiff, replace that and the ECU......if the TBSM is OK, and the ECU smells burnt, replace ECU....if TBSM is OK and ECU smells OK.....time to look elsewhere, first is the Gear Selector module for the signal to shift into low range, and also the relevant connections to the BeCM......all circuits, connectors and pin outs will be detailed in RAVE.

If yours is a Manual DT, check the Ratio Change Switch on the centre console.....

Remember the vehicle needs to be stationary and in neutral before the ratio will change.

Right okay I will check all of that and see if I can find the problem. Thanks for the advice. It is a manual and the light isn't coming up at all so I think I will check the change switch first.

The RR god has spoken. You're a lucky man.

Must be manual otherwise he wouldn't have the switch on the dash. The light inside the switch often fails but you should hear the motor trying to do something underneath.

Yes, the lamps do fail.....but as you say you should hear the 'whine' of the shift motor, and also the message centre should indicate the ratio is changed with the relevant message and also the bleeding annoying 'beep' noise !!!
 
I am not getting the light, beeping, Motor noise or message coming up when I press the button. I take it your very well known in these forums then? I appreciate the help.

I have been hanging around the halls of LZ for nearly 9 years.....and been a Range Rover owner for many more.

My long standing love of all things Green Oval started at the age of 6 (32 years ago) , and has been a big part of my life since then.

I have owned numerous different Range Rovers from early Classics, through to the 'facelifted' models of the late 80's, I have owned all the different variants of P38, from the 4.0 and 4.6 GEMS, the 4.0 and 4.6 THORs and also the 2.5 M51 Diesel...!!

I currently own an early L322 and I love the marque, I love the brand, I love the fact I get to 'play' when it breaks down.....

I haven't been on LZ as much as I used to over the last few months, following the passing of my Mother at the end of August and having to make sure my Dad is OK etc....but he is a stoic and strong gentlemen made of the finest British mettle....so I can now devote more time to LZ again and helping out as I always have done previously.....

Some may call me a Range Rover God.....which is very humbling to hear, but I stand on the shoulder of giants and we all have our own place in the LZ world, and we all help eachother out....along with endless micky taking and wind ups, but that is the best thing about LZ.....the jokes, the craic and the second to none knowledge and help from the outstanding members who frequent this forum.....

If you get no noises, lights, beeps or movements, first check the switch and the wiring thereto.....if that is sound, start looking at the Transfer Box ECU etc.
 
P38Stewart, where about in North Scotland are you? It's possible I am the closest member or perhaps not :D

That's a long time on this forum, ive been a fan of all things land rover since I can remember and when this P38 came up through a friend cheaply and jumped at the chance. I have noticed the occasion jokes and things on different threads and things and have always found this place very helpful.

Thats alot of range rovers you've had, no wonder they call you the range rover god. Im sorry about your mother and hope you and your dad get on okay.

About the low range, I will look at the switch and check all the connections for it and take it from there on what you've said.
