hi all can anybody help i went out this morning to my range rover p38 started it up then i got a message alert saying gear box over heat i turned it off then started it again no message but when i drove it it was like it was in limp mode after about 5 mile all of a sudden i got my power back and seems ok now can anybody help me please and thanks in advance.

Check the transmission oil level first when COLD, as per the handbook/RAVE.

Could also be battery related check the battery is fully charged

i will check the gear box oil in the morning i will check the battery then as well but i dont think its the battery as it fires up 1st turn of the key is there anything else it could be if it aint them thanks for your help

Next step if both the above are ok is a diagnostic check with Faultmate/Autologic/Test Book.

I have had "Gearbox Fault" up in the past and the car lacked "Pull", switched off the ignition and restarted without any fault message and ran fine for a week or more then went again......battery died shortly after, replaced battery and nothing since,

i also forgot to mention this afternoon it said my alarm had been triggered but it hadnt gone off do you think that could have anything to do with it aswell????

Think I am just suffering from this, had gear box fault yesterday, lacked power as I returned home, struggled up my drive, turned over first thing this morning, gearbox fault warning, no lights on the displays, rev counter registered zero even when pushing accelerator, engine cut out every warning mesage the ecu know about flashed up and now the p38 wont start. Guessing the battery is dead awaiting Britannia recovery to come and sort it....

oh no let me know how you get on with that ade1703. i went out this morning checked battery seems ok gear box oil seems ok but still got the problem think im going to have to get it plugged in

As Rick the Pick says, or bad earths. Pull the lid off the fuse box and have a sniff for burnt plastic.

azzd - it was indeed the battery, completely dry, dead as a dead thing. held enough charge to start and that was it. Also turned out to be completely under spec'd. I have seen bigger batteries on a head torch :p
Battery replaced and all working fine. Now just need to reset all the windows, sunroof, and work out which cable it is under the drivers seat which keeps setting off the airbag warning light as it is getting annoying now that everytime someone moves the seat the airbag srs light comes on.
