the fluid was a dull red and about 5 litres came out, only put 4 back in to the line
Fluid level should be checked with the engine cold and idling after moving slowly through all gear positions. A second change needs doing after 1K miles or so.

i am a bit confused by the fluid levels, I am presuming when idling after a run, ie hot the level should be on the second higher hole on the dip stick ?

where should it be when not running and cold

No idea what it should be when hot. Should only be checked when cold and engine running and cycling through gears as above.
Engine has to be running to fill the TC as far as I understand

The level should NOT be checked when hot as the level varies with temperature. It can only be checked engine/transmission cold with engine idling after running through the gears.

The level in an Auto varies from Hot/Cold for obvious reasons.

Some Auto transmissions have a hot/cold level on the stick, however I don't think the P38 does..

My XJ40 with the HP22 does, it should be checked with the engine running and after cycling through the gears.

It should take no more than 4.9 litres after draining the sump.

Sit in car with engine cold, start engine and then run through all gears without driving away. Get out making sure gear lever in park, leave engine running. Check fluid level. Should be at second hole up. If below top up if over take a bit out.
