Hi Mates ..
This Is My Story With The A/c In My P38 ,1996, 4.6, Hse ..
It's Really A Perfect Clean Car ... Since A Year Ago I Owned It ..
No Engines Problems , No Suspentions Problems ...
But ...
When I Bought The Car In Summer 2006 , The A/c Wasn't Working ... The Lcd Was Displaying The Book Everytime I Turn The Engine On .
So The Seller Told Me That He Changed The Battery .. Then He Sent Me To An Electrician To Try To Help .. But It Was Really The Inverse ..
He Worked 3 Days ... Checking All The System Components..
No Result.
In The Third Day ... I Saw Him Working Dowm .. Next To The Conpressor ... So He Turn The A/c On , And The Cold Air Came Out .. I Thought He Did It .. But Not Yet .. I Asked Him :
" What Did You Do ?" He Answered I Change The Wires .. I Think He Meant He Changed The Wires Source ( Matrix ??)
I Told Him :" No Side Effects ???" He Answered :" No " .
I Left The Garage .. And After 5 Minutes The Air Returned To Become Normal ( As Outside ) And The Lcd Displayed The Book ..
I Was Desperate ..
Now Every Time I Turn The A/c On .. The Lcd Displays The Book After 5 Minutes ..

if you are low on air con gas in the system, then this will happen.

Well, damn me. I came on to put a search in for the A/C book and it's the newest post. It's been a hot day today and to try out my newly installed O rings and to give everything the best test I could I kept all the windows shut and put the climate control on auto at 16 degrees, the lowest without going over to manual. The cab didn't turn into an oven, so the chilling nust have been working as outside air alone couldn't possibly have cooled the cab with three of us in. The book's never showed up before but it did today after a few minutes after firing up each time. I'll find out how to top up the A/C gas but I've had the Climate Control head unit out the day before yesterday. I'd appreciate help--again---please. regards P.S

O.K, noticed the compressor clutch wasn't kicking in, so read the workshop manual and everything pointe to an electrical problem. As I'd used the creative method for replacing heater O rings and the creative method for stuck shut glove box remedy I guessed I might fit in the equation somewhere. Back of the EVAC unit was favourite after checking fuses 8 & 17 and the connector beside the compressor. I can dismantle the panelling around the cubby box, gear leaver/tunnel sides in my sleep, now so exreacting the unit wasn't daunting at all. It turned out to be a connector block that hadn't snapped in correctly owing to a weak plastic locking tag. I used the creative method to make it springy again brushe some polyethowhatsit [switch cleaner] on all connections and reassembled. O.K now. What I'll do without any problems and logging onto this forum god only knows. I'll be wondering round, a whimpering aimless wreck. regards to all P.S:) :) :p :p ;)

Do You Think I Must Find Out The Main Wire And Reconnect It With The Compressor And Then I Will Try To Do What You Did ?
 
Being a total newcomer to this forum and certainly no expert. The workshop manual gives a pretty lucid fault finding chart. It all boils down to the compressor clutch kicking in or not. It seems a low flying cloud will stop it. My clutch wasn't kicking in and both hoses from it were of equal temperature. The book says one should be hot and the other cold. Providing you've got jiuce, asyou say you've got, in the system 90% of remaining problems seem connections or the control unit itself. My problem solved itself by checking all connections. I wouldn't even attempt to pretend I could've gone further without the dreaded hook up to a test book. You'll find a link to an excellent pdf worshop manual on this forum and I've read just about every single post my searches threw up. The guru's are your men on this. Cross your fingers that they come up with more help than me. regards P.S

Do You Thing I Must Follow The Wires Starting From The Compressor ??
And How To Take Off The Front Grill , I Need To Check The Wires Behind It ..?

i don't know if this will help. too low a voltage at compressor clutch, less than 11 i think? is too low to engage it coerrectly

my a/c worked when it bloody well liked, not usually on hot days. the compressor didn't kick in until i touched it with screwdriver, worked out i didn't have enough voltage at coil under the compressor clutch that in turn had caused it to wear due to slipping causing the gap to be to big and making problem even worse.
there's a service bulletin covering this, it involves fitting new loom to a/c supply with new additional relay and fuse in fuse box, and removing a shim from behind the compressor clutch to lessen the gap. if i remember right you don't want no more than .6mm between bit that turns and bit that dont (could be .8mm cant remember) any how i removed shim to give me .3mm and fitted new loom and relay/fuse to fuse box to stop further slipping, £54 and 20 mins.
problem solved, roll on summer time.
you need to see if the clutch bites when touched assuming a/c on and if you don't have a relay for a/c in fusebox, i got a rave cd but the bloody thing don't work so i cant give you the bulletin number.

YMQ104590AA wiring assy £50.83 + vat
it comes complete with loom, relay, fuse, resistor and sticker for fuse box lid

get a multi metre on the two wires that disapear behing the clutch pulley and check voltage there, if it says 10.anything its too low, you may hit clutch assy with screwdriver handle and it engages then not enough voltage.

BeCM ... BEFORE HE DID THIS , THE A/C LCD DISPLAYS THE BOOK + ! WHEN I TURN THE IGNITION KEY ON ... BUT NOW THE LCD DISPLAYS THE BOOK AFTER 6 OR 7 MINUTES ROUGHLY AFTER THE ENGINE IS TURNING ON .
WHAT DO YOU THINK ??

i would have thought the best way to solve a problem is to repair/replace the defective part, not cutting and joining wires to get round it, wires that should really be going where l/r intended. if the clutch aint engaging hit it with screw driver and if it works check the voltage. if it engages all the time it is meant to be on then i cant help you apart from suggesting not to cut cable and join them with others, i would think?
AND from reading your first post again at your kind invitation, it seems that it may be a voltage problem as he (the mechanic) it would seem found another power source for the compressor but as it not running from the correct source the climate control gets confused and shuts down, this would seem logical as other wise why would he change the wires to the compressor clutch!!, and the wires only feed the clutch after a temp cut out built into the compressor so the best repair is find the fault instead of working round it.

no worries mate, as they say down under.
get a multi meter and check voltage at compressor when air con on, its an easy to do thing but be careful as engine will prob be running.
