Hi all I am haveing big problems with my p38 it was a 4.0 but engine went tits up so found a genuine 4.6 landrover exchange unit so. Had it fitted at a garage car started first time idel good sounds really sweet they took it for a test drive everything ok then when stopped at junction went to set of no drive came up gearbox fault so had it recoverd back to garage left it over night still no drive no gearbox fault message not displayed any more still no drive on dash it says in in gear and when you move gear selector it says you in relivent gear but still no drive it revs fine and runs smooth any ideas please I don't know where to turn

What state is your battery in??

Get the voltmeter out and check...

Engine off I would expect 12.4-12.8V

Engine Running at around 2000rpm I would expect 14.4 to 14.8V

Any less and the battery and/or alternator is duff....

Low volts can cause havoc with the P38 with ABS Traction Control and Gearbox faults being among the first to show up....

How do I go about checking and adjusting cable if needed thanks
You don't the garage that fitted the engine should do it:) Good idea to check that the gearbox has enough oil in it. Possibly the torque convertor was not properly fitted and the oil pump drive has sheared.

The 4.0 and 4.6 had a different box. Doubt that is your problem here but worth thinking about if your 4.6 didn't come with its own gearbox.

yes different last one i changed the other way round 4.6 box into a 4.0 had to change all of it, ie flexi plate, converter, bellhousing then the crank sensor had to be modded headach

If the oil pump us can it be changed or is it a new gearbox

If the garage did the work, it's not your problem. If the torque convertor was not properly located and it's bust the drive lugs then it's box out at the very least. James Martin is your man to speak to.

check all wires and connector plugs on gearbox unplug them and reconnect known it happen before
