Ok fears confirmed, it is the flex plate, took both inspection plates off of the bell housing and with a bit of phone shining noticed the mis-aligned edge around one bolt hole on the flex plate (pic attached) the other 3 seem ok so I guess that's why it's held together for 5000 miles without getting any worse.
Think I should probably sort it sooner rather than later though as I'd hate to temp fate!
Probably safety to change the spigot bearing and possibly the torque convertor as well as I bet they are a bit damaged after 500 miles of shaking about!
Going to struggle to do this on our current rental place gravel drive so may have to bite the bullet and find a local friendly landy man sadly.
Much as it's a pain it's good to finally know the cause, and I wouldn't have thought to look in this area if it wasn't for the forum chat, so many thanks for the pointers.
