Hi I'm new to this forum, I've just bought a 2001 4.6 range rover with a gearbox problem it won't pull away in D you have to pull away in 1st then move to D and then it's ok and sometimes when you pull away it's making a banging noise for a few seconds. I've been looking at new gearboxes but someone said to me today the gearbox might need servicing does anyone have any ideas if that would be worth trying first or should I just get a new gearbox for it? Thanks.

Sounds like the sprag clutch has failed to me. Which will result in having to manually put it in 1 to start as you said.

+1
So it's beyond an oil and filter change it needs repairing or replacing. Those boxes are normally reliable so you might even want to consider a second hand one, from a reputable source.

still worth checking the oil level/quality

Unless the fluid level is low which can cause problems - it's kaput. You'll be wasting your money changing the oil and filter. If it is just the sprag clutch then an auto specialist should be able to overhaul it for a reasonable price. The transmission in the 4.6 is a Range Rover rarity - something fit for purpose - and they usually last well if maintained.

+1 you would not give a blood change to a person with a knackered heart
hoping it would cure them would you?

You might be surprised at what fresh oil a new filter and a dose of Lucas will do. However the sprag clutch is a bit of a weak point, if the pawls flip they will not come back. Look at Ashcrofts site for more info.

Like the power steering post I think its a case of papering over the cracks. If there a problem ,fix it, IMHO :)

Well, if I had your kind of money, I would just fit a new gearbox, but for £50 on oil and 2 flasks of Lucas, I'm very happy that my gearbox is now working perfectly.:):)

Absolutely for issues such as sticky valve blocks etc - but I don't think this is that kind of issue.
