front shaft universal joints replaced by garage picked car up and drove home after about 4 miles sitting at about 60 mph universal joint at transfer box came apart smashed gearbox selector switch and shaft wrecked front prop shaft garage replaced parts but now have grinding grumbling vibration coming from below front passenger seat methinks damage from propshaft has done something to transferr box any ideas and should front propshaft ujs be inline or ofset ???

Just had rangie in mates field with suspension at max lift low range and high range no noise from prop shaft ujs took her on main road 40/60 ish rumble from below passenger side foot well area mate sitting there felt and heard droning noise and vibration

they should be in-line. thats why you have an off-set position on the axle for the diff.

but it does sound like the transfer case is shagged to me. have you tried putting it in low range? see what happens?

1. When did this happen ?
2. Did garage check for any collateral damage ?
3. Did you ask them to do so?
4. Did they say on what basis they were replacing ? i.e. did they accept fault ?
 
sounds to me that they forgot to put a circlip in properly, thats about the only way a UJ and explode, well a new 1 at least!
 
there should be something inside it. RAVE tells you to mark prop shaft AND flanges before removal. maybe they forced it together thinking it was tight. and now you have driven it, it has wound up and took the transfer case with it.

what part/parts actually gave way? was it the UJ's or was it the join on the shaft?

in what way ?props have to be aligned at the sliding joint , at either drive flange it doesnt matter ,id be surprised if it hurt t/box ,often seen gear box side smashed in and had to rebuild gear box into another case
 
me motors no right though and is there not keyed spline on front shaft to gaurantee alignmrnt of ujs

Hate to tell you this but you need to get a recognised "expert" probably a main dealer to examine, diagnose and give you a formal report on cause.
If their report points to negligence you are up and running.
Take pics, or get garage to take pics.
Assuming a positive report, inform garage who did the work ( don't send report ...yet) and ask them for their proposals. They may pass to their insurers, may offer to put right......or might deny liability.
At least you'll know where you stand.
Don't let anybody else near it.

Don't forget to mention that this was a potentially lethal failure. If it was down to incompetence, they need to be aware just how serious the consequences could have been.
 
Front propshaft on P38 should be offset about 3 degrees. For the automatic diesel at least.

sold the damn thing to garade looking for new rangie

How can you blame the "damn" car for a consumable item being incorrectly renewed and then damaging the car? I would not have given up until the garage in question had fully rectified the damage they caused,
